I'm starting to put together a basic nailing rack and see that most gear lists for nailing routes suggest X number of sawed-off angles. Okay so how short do I lop 'em off? Halfway? More? Less?

You will find the answer here in my Ultimate Big Wall Checklist.

Check the top of page 5 and also page 2.

I just bought a new pin that says it is made by Cassin. It is the equivalent of a sawed-off 3/4" standard, and might save me some sawing.

Edit: Nah, I don't like it. Cut off the regular angles.

I don't like the Pika ones, which you can read about in the above link.

I also make a semi-sawed off, where I only cut off about 25%.

But you will see in the link above, the correct amount to saw off the end is about 40%.

Atta boy!

You can cut angles with a hacksaw. A low-rent blade will give out quickly against the cro-moly steel, though. Get a more expensive bi-metal blade. Use a 16 or 24 TPI blade. Oil helps alot. A file can be used to round off the sharp edges.

Even better, if you have a hand-held angle grinder, get a really thin cut-off wheel (1/16" or 3/32" max) and use that. You will ruin the heat treatment right at the cut, unless you cut some, cool it in water, and cut some more. Don't bother. Softening the tip of the sawed-off pin will not affect it enough to worry about.

For making bathooks, or otherwise altering hooks, you absolutely need to grind slowly, and cool very often. Otherwise, you risk making a hook that will straighten out under body weight.

That's right, Tom (Apollodorus) is the man for the last minute saw-offs and hook sharpening in Camp Curry!

He can also whip you up a bolt removal "tuning fork." Hell with a generator, I am sure he could manufacture an entire rack for you.

Thanks amigo! :D :D
