I've been seein these terms thrown around here alot and I've been able to surmize that sport climbing is with placed handholds and bolts and trad climbing is with natural pockets and cams and such. Aide climbing I can't figure out so I'm asking here. thanks.

aid climbing is form of climbing where you used your geat to advance (eg, put in a cam and pull on it).

i understand that aid climbing uses the gear to advance up the rope. (as opposed to trad/sport climbing,. where the climber _Climbs_ the wall,a nd the rope is to protect the cloimber should he or she fall.) what i don't undertsand is how it owrks. ina ll the aid climbing photos i've seen, there's a rope hanign down that someone is just jugging up. how do they place the rope? do they just place pro and then move the rope up the gear? it seems like this is not much different than free climbing. i know there;s asimple answer that will make sense once it is explained, but i aw this thread and htought i'd ask in here.

aid climbing is more like wall construction..It really has nothing to do with climbing at all... Clean Aid and Free climb..You will live a happy life.

The rope hanging down is because someone else lead the pitch (most likely aid style) The second, instead of ascending by climbing the rock, usually climbs the rope with ascenders and if need be, picks up pieces left behind by the leader.

Why boulder? Why trad climb? Why sport climb? Why climb at all? Why do 40% of the threads lately seem to be asking "Why climb in that style?" or "What does sport/trad/aid mean?" or "Which style do you think is better?" :) Bryan

All types of climbing are pretty stupid, but I sure like climbing.

dosnt really look like anybody has answered this question properly, didnt check the link put in by bouldertom but here is a quick easy explaination. Aid climbing is basically climbing using any form of advancement up the rock normally invloving heaps of hardwear.A simple aid climb goes somethying like this. Reach as high as you can ,place a peice of gear, clip your etriers(spelling? a set of 4 or 5 step sling ladders) onto the gear and walk on up the steps. once somewhere near your top step reach as high as you can and place your next gear and then clip in your second set of etriers and repeat. A rope is trailed behind clipping into gear to stop a fall and also for the second to jug up.the second jugs up the rope to save time and so they can hang around removing troubles some gear. As for why people take up such a slow and seemingly boring past time well its the only way i can drag my way up a big wall and it enables me to get to places otherwise impossible for someone of my climbing ability. Hope this helps you out and if you would like a more detaied explaination let me know and i could go into more detail about the aid climbing system.
