Denver or Boulder?

Ok, so my wife has applied to two schools, one in Denver, the other Boulder. Based on climbing potential Boulder seems like the logical choice but what about cost of living? I also will need a job in construction. So my question to all of you from Colorado is, what city should I be hoping for :?:

Confused in Washington.

Oh man! that isn't even a question!

Boulder

1 Climbing
2 Working construction in Boulder = getting paid to hang out with other climbers and train for nailing aid routes
3 Climbing
4 Better school (convenient argument to use with sig other)
5 Cost of living? higher, but you can do it on the cheap
6 10 minutes to eldo (for your after-work multipitch) for...
7 Climbing

Or, you could always live in Denver, work with the usual construction crowd (Bubba), and spend your weekends driving to/from climbs

Well, I've lived in Boulder for four years now, and while I highly recommend the school itself, the cost of living is certainly crazy. I'm getting an unreal deal on rent (considering Boulder)-- I'm in a 3-bedroom house about a mile and a half from campus and we're paying a total of $1000/month. Close to campus, it's not unlikely for people to pay upwards of $600/person/month.

My take: the school in Boulder is excellent (as is the climbing!), and if you don't mind commuting a bit, find a place a bit away from campus-- rent seems to fall exponentially as distance from campus increases (feeling geeky here--immediately invisioned an exponential decay curve...)

Anyway, good luck!

Either place will work just fine for you. I live in Denver. Takes about 45 minutes to go to Boulder. Other areas like Clear Creek are 20-30 minutes. It really depends on where you live in the Denver area.
Boulder is more expensive and worse traffic. You'll be ultra close to the classic Boulder areas like Eldo, Boulder Canyon, Flatirons etc. You can't beat the scenery in Boulder either. It is a very beautiful place.
Denver is definitely less expensive to live. More job opportunities too. You could still be close enough to Boulder to make after work sessions to most of the areas. Clubs, bars, restaurants, are generally better in Denver, but Boulder has plenty of fine places too. Denver is also centrally located compared to Boulder. You can hit some climbing areas after work, that you probably wouldn't if you lived in Boulder. South Platte, and Castlewood Canyon are two that come to mind.
So if you have to live by the crags, Boulder is where you need to be. If it is not such a concern and you wouldn't mind saving some money, go to Denver. There are burbs located in-between the two cities that may be a good compromise for you. Look at Westminster, Broomfield, Golden, and Louisville. Good luck.

OK, so some silly little questions -- which schools, what is her intended major, what level of school (undergrad vs. grad), what are her goals for using the education, and where do intend to live & work after school is over.

Funny thing we have here in Colorado -- cars and (mostly) paved roads. You can actually live in one city and drive to climb in another (but don't tell anyone from Boulder about our little secret).

Concentrate on the school first. After a few years it will be over, and you can climb anywhere your salary permits for the rest of your life.
