Recently, a couple of threads talked about how a climber's decision making abilities may have been impaired by the type/quantity of food consumed, thus, contributing to an awesome and scary trip report. So, I'd like to know what sort of snacks most of you bring to the crags.

i was just in the RRG for a week and every day I brought a can of tuna to the crag with some bread to eat it with, a few apples and granola bars. dried fruit (apricots, apples, etc) are good too. I don't eat power/energy bars very often.

Usually I take peanut butter granola Slim Fast bars or portable peanut butter tubes. But lately I've had a hankerin' for ham and cheese Lunchables. Mmmm... sodium. Diana

peanut, cashew or some type of nut butter, nut mix, granola, cytomax (thanks Brenda for turning me on to cytomax). Usually high fat, high protein items.

On every climb I carry two Clif Bars (one for my partner, because I'm a girl-scout). When camping, I make sure to consume as many bananas and as much peanut butter as possible. Both have huge dietary benefits (potassium from the B's helps deal with lactic acid build up and soreness, peanut butter contains lots of calories, protein, and oils to keep energy up).

Any substitutes for bananas? They taste okay, but once I get them in my mouth, I just can't chew.. I just can't.. Something about the texture.. Horrible.. I love dried apricots and can eat them all day, but I've no idea if they are healthy.. :? As to bonking, I notice that I often get tired and stupid, but would that be because I'm not drinking/eating enough or that I'm drinking is gatorade I may have sugar crashed? I like sweet and its powder form is convenient not 'cuz its a "power drink". I'm not good about drinking water.

PBJ, peanuts or cashews, sometimes pouch tuna, always gummi worms or bears, luna or cliff bars, dark chocolate for that time of the month, cracker jacks for my boy, and lots of water . . .

In reply to: I love dried apricots and can eat them all day, but I've no idea if they are healthy.. :? As to bonking, I notice that I often get tired and stupid, but would that be because I'm not drinking/eating enough . I'm not good about drinking water. Force yourself. Water is good for your body - arguably better than any sugary power drink - and staying hydrated will go a long way to keep you from "bonking". It's especially important if you're going anywhere with altitude increases to increase your H20 intake. Don't know about apricot but try dried mango...those things are really good for quickly boosting energy, at least I've found they do. But I don't eat much when I climb, maybe a Luna bar or two. I just don't get hungry climbing. AFTER a day of climbing I'll eat like a horse...but not during. But I do drink tons of water throughout the day.

What Beth said. I am lazy about liquid intake and food. If I could take a pill every day to sate me, I would. That said, the only times I've ever really gotten sick climbing is when I got dehydrated and cramped. I have a tendency to have this happen rather easily, and trust me, it's not pleasant. Two Nalgenes a day, every day. 4 on climbing days. At least.

Make sure you replace those lost electrolytes on the big walls, too. If it's ungodly hot, you can get to the point where you are drinking water but cannot retain it in your cells due to osmotic pressure. I read a story written by a guy who had that happen to him twice. Add some salt back into the cells and they suck up that water like a sponge. Salty snack foods are good. So is gatorade and powerade (though too sweet) and cytomax. Not sure about that new Propel stuff. You can add a small amount of salt to one water yourself as well, but be careful with the measure.

Deb...I sent you a PM. Costellobr (Brenda) introduced me to cytomax...below is a description of the product pasted from their website. Brenda and I drank cytomax in Mexico and climbed non stop for 10 hours! Beats The BurnTM: Cytomax's patented alpha L-PolylactateTM buffers lactic acid production in your muscles, reducing the "burn" during intense training and minimizing post-exercise muscle soreness. Steady Energy: Complex carbs stabilize blood sugar during exercise - no sugar crash Cell Protection: antioxidants prevent exercise-induced free radical damage to muscle cells Oxygen Delivery: succinates enhance oxygen delivery by up to 11% during exercise, reducing perceived exertion and minimizing muscle damage Cellular Balance: Electrolytes ensure cellular nutrient balance is restored quickly after exercise Low Osmoality: ensures fluid reaches your muscles quickly - as fast as water!

Wonderful! Thanks for all the information! Just got back from Joshua Tree and drank lots of water, ate trail mix of nuts and dried fruit from Trader Joe's, and actually ate more bananas than I ever have had. No gatorade since I'm a teeny wall climber. Heh. This was my *best* climbing trip ever! No bonking! Woo-hoo!

I put cheese nips, sesame sticks (either honey or super spicy depending on my mood), peanut butter m&m's, regular m&m's, raisins, and cashews in a giant zip lock bag and take that with me. Satisfies my cravings salty-sweet. I'll share, but no selective picking! I put Rice Chex in last time, but that didn't go over too well.

In reply to: Two Nalgenes a day, every day. 4 on climbing days. At least. Exactly! And the more you get used to drinking water regularly throughout the week, the easier it'll be to really down it on the weekends when you're climbing. It just becomes second nature to always have a Nalgene of water around. and keep sipping on water I'm sitting at work almost done with my second full Nalgene of the day.

Hmmm....lets see, soy nuts (tons of protein), luna bars, emergen-C (like cytomax), fruit leather, homemade beef jerky, dried fruit...... Ofcourse I bring all that stuff, but I seem to loose my appitite when working out, so I usually end up just eating a luna bar and some soy nuts, then pig out when I get back home.

One word: Skittles! It's bad, but I'm absolutely addicted to them! Besides that, I'm a very healthy eater, and tend to bring lots of water and trail mix...but the rainbowy-colored skittles are my weaknes....

Lately I've been taking just one cliff or balance bar for food and then water. I tried bringing gatorade last weekend and I intend to bring more gatorade in the future because it helps me drink down more water (Ventura tap water sucks by the way). In the past I've taken: trail mix, those lunch tuna and cracker packs, turkey sandwiches, apples and baby carrots. In the way past I used to bring no food at all but that was a mistake let me tell you, hehe.

My group and I (girls and guys) always seem to find ourselves with peanut butter bagel sandwiches and cheese and crackers. Usually wheat thins. And grapefruit. I don't think any of us put any sort of rhyme or reason into what we bring...

Since treats are my specialty I thought I'd post up. I bring lots of water, Twizzlers and Sugarbabies. If I want something better its dried apricots and carrots. I'm called Queen Candy by all I know. I have to live up to my reputation.
