Gday. I am looking at buying a camera, and I hope you knowledgeable people can help me. I am living in Japan and do a lot of travelling throughout SE Asia, and there is just so much that I want to record. This is what I have looked at so far. Prices are an approx convertion from Yen to US $. I don't really want a professional/top of the line camera because at this stage I am more interested in just learned the ropes, so to speak. Canon EOS III, EF 28-80 m/m, $475 Canon EOS Kiss 5, EF 28-90 & 90-300 m/m, $620. Nikon F80D, AF 28-100 m/m, $675. Pentax IST, FAJ 28-80 & 73-300 m/m, $615. Nikon FM10, 35-70 m/m, $310. Canon EOS IX50, 25-55 EF, $280 (Second hand, good cond.) Canon EOS 605, 35-70m/m, $150 (Second hand, good cond.) Any feedback would be appreciated. Cheers.

I was all set to pick up the Canon EOS IX50, 25-55 EF untill I found out that it did not come with a manual (2nd hand), and it does not accept slide film. So I am now looking at the Canon EOS III, EF 28-80 m/m, $475 instead. Does anyone know if this camera accepts slide film? Thanks. Edit. Yes it does.

The 3 is a nice camera. The 28-80 is not such a nice lens, but you can deal with that later. Side note: no, not every camera that takes film can take slide film. I don't think anyone ever made APS slide film. I'd get a digital slr, but that's just me. :)

if you can afford it, you will probably be happier with a digital SLR like the Nikon D70 or the Canon EOS300D. Both retail for < $1000. If you take a film camera and shoot slow slide film in SE Asia during the rainy season, you will want a tripod and some ND grad filters. I took some shots that are up on my website, in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It was a great trip and whatever picture-taking device you get, you will come back with a boatload of great pictures, just as long as you shoot a lot of frames. :-)
