If I can't trust you not to grope me, why would I trust you to catch me?

....I've also seen a number of female climbers who'd be just as likely to grope me as any guy would.
Safety first, groping second, so long as it's mutual!

Geoff you're right.
You don't want to catch people when you are spotting them. A spoter guides a person down to the ground and keeps them from hurting themselves.
I was just making a joke.
Catching them would put both people in danger.
But the key to catching girls is being able to outrun them.
Ha Ha Ha!

I'd spot a girl anytime. Last time I did for my friend she came off the wall and my hands fit perfectly near her hips. It was excellent. Soft landing. Hey nikegirl, sorry about your ankle. I'd never let you turn your ankle. Hey, would you spot me?

I agree with bcmtngrrrl. If a lady is afraid of aou groping her, what is the point in asking you for a spot? Just spot and if your hands slide, apologize. She`ll have to understand. Maybe shel`ll even like it . who knows, maybe there is more to it than just spoting . Climb on.

Hey Nikegirl....If your ever in the New Jersey area make sure you get in touch with me I will spot you and if you fall don't worry I will be there. I have spotted for indoor comps, been kicked in the stomach, head, had bruises in places I won't discuss but my climbers never got hurt.

It is an odd mentallity to spotting. You have to be serious about spotting and know that one day that person may be the one there for you. You think anyone can do it but that person can't be afraid to throw their body under the falling climber. If they hesitate even the slightest that is when problems occur. So again if your ever somewhere near Jersey you can count on a spot from me.

I'll spot a woman anytime,if I want to be touching delicate parts of a womans body,it won't be a fast grab.It will be a sweet soft sensual caress. That's where it's at!!If they are uncomfy with being touched at certain places, they should get a spotter they are comfortable doing that.NO excuse for a miss!!!This is the SAFETY of your climbing partner we're speaking of.
And,Nikegirl,I'd spot you anytime,,if you promise to fall now and then(man ,was that cheap)
Sorry about your ankle
Climb Happy
Spot Safe

I wouldn't have any problem spotting a female. Not all contact with women has to be sexualized. If she asked me to spot her then she assumes the possibility of me touching her somewhere that she may not want to be touched, and I assume the responsibility to try to protect her from injury to the best of my ability.

Girls are light and usually a pleasure to spot. Although, a girl(definitely a beginner) did break by nose and nearly my neck once. Rather than climb to her limit she gave up and pushed herself away from the wall w/o warning. I broke her fall, but with my face! Lesson is; don't stand too close to the problem.

On an admitted tangent, I don't boulder very hard with girl spotters(or small guys for that matter). They tend to weigh a third less than I, making for a disadvantage. I am not speaking to female readers here, I know all of you spot like linebackers, of course.

Yeah, I can understand why some guys would be uncomfortable spotting a girl. The simple fact is we live in a world where you can get in deep s%#t (i.e. sued) just for looking at a girl the wrong way. That being said, if your spotter isn't comfortable doing his job it is his responsibility to speak up. I can remember spotting a friend of mine and having her twist off and catching her with a hand on the chest. Hey, s%#t happens and she is a good friend so she understands this. When it comes down to a choice between being accused of copping a feel, which was definitly not the case, and keeping her from getting hurt, I'm not going to have her hurt because I didn't do my job. Guys have caught me with a hand on my chest before after their hands have slipped over the lats but of couse this is no big deal, however it does show that catching someone like this is not done because of gender, it just happens. Now if it happens with any frequency whatsoever don't stand for that garbage. When my friends and I boulder everybody is the same and any misplaced hands are cleared up with a "crap, sorry" and if your good friends that's all that's needed.

Notice the date of the original post....

I have learned a lot about asking for a spot...
Fiend's dialogue is key.

Quote:

T: "You're gonna spot me right?"
S: "Yeah, of course T, I got ya"
T: "Ok, you're sure right?"
S: "Yeah, yeah."

I've used this repetitivly...
and while in Josh: with the group from this site.
No problem there!! Great Spotting!!
Allthough, there was a hillarious dialogue about the whole issue...and pictures taken, in humor!!

I haven't had any issues as of late.
Trust is the key.
Vocal is another.
I also had some great spotters...since. Tony at Carver...truly made me feel secure, working a V3.

Thanks for the advice from all the Above, hopefully this thread, has helped others as it has me...

I enjoy spotting girls simply because they are usually lighter, and every once in awhile you get to be the hero by catching her in mid-air and setting her down on the ground softly. The whole "hand-on-the-boobs" issue is always best dealt with humor. If you care about someones safety, it shouldn't matter. Girls should probably first make sure the guys not a real pervert, though.

To me if you say you're going to spot someone (man or woman) you have to spot them. And understand that in the process of catching them you might catch them in a, I hate to sound immature, but a "private area" big deal. I'd rather have that then hit the ground and I'd rather catch someone and risk touching something then have my climbing partner get hurt or not trust me. When you are climbing/bouldering you accept that it might happen. And when you are spotting its the same. Your job isn't to try to or be sure not to cop a feel but to make sure your partner is safe period. I work in a gym and some people don't understand that. As we all know, when you're climbing your body gets in on some weird positions and it happens. Nikegirl, I'm sorry you got hurt. I personally would have a hard time trusting that spotter again. He has to get over it. I hope you find a spotter you can trust and no we're not all scared to spot women.

Sorry to hear about the ankle i would be pretty p!ssed off too.

Maybe this guy has a short attention spand or something!? in which case you should grab him by the shoulders, shake him violently and scream at the top of your voice; "Are you gunna spot me or what you immature little turd!!!!" OR you can take the less exciting but safer option of getting someone else to spot you.
