It means absolutely nothing to me. I don't worship the earth, I don't love the earth, the earth is not my mother, etc..etc.. However I DO respect the fact that the earth is a limited resource and thus treat it accordingly to the best of my ability, i.e. Don't litter, don't intentionally damage trees/wildlife and so on. The earth deserves resonable care every day. Earth Day seems more like some kind of pagan marketing scheme. Blah.

I don't disagree at all! But, I don't see anything wrong with choosing a day to actively and dileberately celebrate the earth.

I get pissed off at people who "celebrate" earth day but don't really think about the earth or even care about it any other day. It reminds me of those people who only go to church on Easter. They're only doing it to feel good about themselves. -Jeff

In reply to: climber49er- have you ever celebrated a birthday? For a person with a known date of birth, yes. For a person of a known age, yes. To celebrate the "Birth" of a big hunk of matter that floats through space, that we happen to be standing on, seems (in my opinion) foolish. I'll celebrate earth's "birthday" when it can blow out the candles on it's cake...

I celebrate the earth daily, with my every breath. I dont need some decree or legislation nor marketing plan to make me understand how precious it is.

In the springtime I don't bother celebrating the earth with every breath because I am too busy blowing my nose due to all the allergans that it throws at me. Really annoying. Weeds in my garden bug me too. Bugs in my house bug me too. Sometimes I wish the earth would just leave me alone.

you know George Carlin used to have a great saying, "The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the Earth will be renewed, and if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the Earth plus plastic. -George Carlin

I think that is a great quote. I have been long saying that... People that say that we are destroying the earth are out of their gourd. We are destroying ourSELVES, but certainly not the earth. The earth has survived a lot worse than us and will continue to be here long after us. This does not mean that I don't believe in Leave No Traces values, environmentalism (loosely interepreted), or other ideas to improve life here. But it is not so that we can keep from destoying the earth. It is to keep from, not only destroying ourselves, but to keep our surroundings beautiful, healthy, and as natural as possible.

I'm with 49er. -Soon they'll be selling freakin' happy earth day cards. And at the local office buildings various clip on tie wearing idiots will give them to all their co-workers and all drive seperate SUV's to their houses in the same neighborhood.

It means that the earth is one-seventh as important as secretaries, and one-twenty-eighth as important as black history. arbitrary. I agree with the "veiled pagan marketing scheme" comments--Wicca attempts to go mainstream  Conservation is every day, etc, etc. Live it.
