i vote move, get a job, and then pay off the debt - but i'm not the world's most responsible person and clearly have my own agenda. ;)

Pay off some of the debt, and reward yourself with a cheaper trip to Colorado. Now the decision becomes how much to commit to the debt load and what to leave for the trip. Depending on the amount of cash you came into, I'd be tempted to do the responsible thing and put at least half to the debt (depending on the juice you have running). Juice will kill you in the long run, taking a bite out of every future trip you're planning. Use the trip to refine your dumpster-diving, can-collecting, ramen-eating skills.

Are we talking about long term, as in moving? Or are we talking about couch surfing.

Pay off your debt. You will find it will be easier to pick up and move with your debt paid off, plus you will have more money each month for trips, vacations, gear, etc. You will be much happier.

Look man, chances are real good you'll be in debt for the rest of your life anyway. You'll probably die in debt. So you pay off this debt, then what? More debt no doubt, and you'll be no closer to the climbing either.

Keep this debt, don't trade up. And move closer to climbing. Don't move when its convenient. Move WHEN YOU CAN.

As soon as you can. One day you will wake up dead. Then what?

We really shouldn't be having this conversation.

For the love of god, PAY THE DEBTS!!! Especially if they are credit cards. That interest is sucking away your cash so fast. Paying it off will be waaaaayy more valuble when every single month you'll have fewer bills to pay.

here's what I propose...

Figure out how much money you're paying in interest each month. Pay off the debt. Each month put into savings the money you would have paid in interest. Soon enough you'll have ample cash for that roadtrip AND you won't have the debt. Of course this takes some self-control to not just let the debt pile back up. If you can't pay your credit card every month cut the f0cker up!

Josh
24 and debt free!!!

Moving, huh? Sorry I misunderstood, packing and heading off sounded like a road trip rather than a move for some reason. Would a bit of both necessarily be out of the question? Chiseling away at debt can take a really long time, so I'd be tempted to take as big a bite as I could. Good luck either way.

just to clarify, lew has been wanting to move out west for a few years now (if not longer). he hasnt been able to do so because money made it impossible. now he has the money and is trying to decide if he should apply the money towards debt (admittedly more responsible) or if he should go ahead and move ("follow your dreams") and work on paying off the debts once he's here.

he plans to pay off the debts and he plans to move - but is having trouble deciding which to do first since he only has money to do one immediately and the other will have to come with time.

I'd pay off the debt. The mountains ain't going anywhere and will be here when you are ready to move.

Then too, I already live here (for another 3 weeks.) YMMV.

I'm in a similar situation: Have to move to Phoenix to make enough to live and pay bills. My plan: Work my tail off when in Phoenix, pay off the bills/debt, then move back.

I regret not paying off my debts when I had the chance: When I left my old job in Atlanta, I cashed in on tons of vacation time... got a nice check, and blew it all on material goods (gear, food, drink, clothes, strippers, etc.) and now I'm still in debt, with no banked funds.

Pay the bills, dude. You'll be glad you did.

Well if you plan on paying off your debt when you move to CO then I say move, follow your dreams. And well more then likely you will be in debt for the rest of your life and this will just be a dent in it. So if you have been wanting to move out west for a couple of years now but cant because of money; and now you haev the money. Man whats keeping, head on out west for a good time and awesome climbing. But thats all my opion so take it how you want.

Oy vey, do not listen to them! Pay off your debt, lol!

In our lives, unless we are very privileged, very ambitious or very lucky, there will be times when we deem it appropriate to go into debt to obtain something, a house, a car, a significant other, a concubine, what have you... we decide that the burden of debt is worth shouldering so that we may enjoy that thing sooner rather than later, or at all.

I would submit there is a lost climber in your soul, looking for the means of daily expression. SET THAT CLIMBER FREE!

If he loves you, he'll come back eventually and pay your debts.

Move and don't look back. Fuck the responsible choice. If you were responsible you wouldn't be a climber now would you???

Just once in your life, you may wish to take the dice of fate and toss them into the wind.

NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!!!!!

Screw the DEBT! Get yourself situated before its too late.

let me break the barrier :D

1 more vote for paying the debt, what good is it to move if ur debt is going to follow u everywhere!

i agree with the interest piling up, that alaone with save u abunch in the long run...

plus, what if u do move, then decide u dont like it as much as u thought and want to move again? then ur royally fucked...

No doubt paying off the debt is responsible. However, opportunities to do want you want to do are few and far between. Since you have offers of places to live, I'd say go for it.

True, but that is a choice one can make. From the original post, it seems the current debt is something the poster wants to be rid of. This is his/her chance.

For example: I have made my choice to pay off my debts, get myself to a zero-debt position, then CHOOSE to enter debt by purchasing a house. That's controlled debt, not "I'm not in control of my debt." Big difference, wouldn't you agree?

My vote stands: Get your debt under control first. That will put you in a much better situation from where you can maek decisions about what you want to do, rather than what you have to do.
