I have never known anyone who has had one. Not everything Pika makes is crap, but it's been my experience that most of their stuff is inferior to similar products offered by Fish and Yates. The products they make that are unique to Pika (ie, the toucans, mallards, etc.) are specialty stuff that you're glad to have if and when you need them.

As for your other comments -- what exactly do you want the moderators to do? We usually catch a bunch of crap for over moderating, but for the life of me, I've never been asked to do MORE moderating. We are responsible for keeping the content neat, tidy, on topic, easy to find, and in compliance with the TOS. We are not responsible for providing that content and generating discussions. If I have questions that are appropriate for this format, I ask 'em. If not, then I'm not going to spend my idle time filling up this forum with self-serving blather just for the sake of up-ing my post count. I'd rather be out there climbing. There are SO many other aid climbers out there who have more experience than I do and for me to just start posting crap about my experiences and my aid climbing theories would just be arrogant. I am alway appreciative when some of the more experienced climbers chime in to comment on topics we discuss and I'd prefer for these guys to lead the way in terms of content provided in this forum. There's nothing worse than a bunch of gumbies and n00bs posting crap just to hear themselves talk. I'd much rather see the quality over quantity.

That said, feel free to start your own threads to spice things up a bit. The more the merrier.

I have a Shield and a Pika Duuble gear sling. Unfortunately, have no personal experience with Pika's big wall harness.

I will say, however, that the foam on the gear sling is quite comfy. I believe it's the same foam used on the harness, only thinner. Everything that I've purchased from Pika has worked well for me in the past. No complaints whatsoever!

The harness does look pretty cool, although, I question it's ability to free climb well. The Yates' Shield free climbs quite well, although the hammer loops can make sleeping a bit uncomfortable if you're a side-sleeper. Kinda makes you want to take it off and use a Bod harness to sleep in.

Hmmmm...not a bad idea

My 2 cents!

I would agree with ed's comments.

Pika toucan's and Mallard's are nice.
But everything else I've used from them was utter crap.
I'm not kidding- stuff broke and fell apart.
I wasn't misusing it or anything and it wasn't over used or old.

I've never had a problem with anything from Yates or fish.

I bought a set of their ladder aiders. The step-stiffeners broke, sent them back and they sent me a new pair. Those broke as well. So, I unloaded them on ebay.

I tried some of their cam hooks. Inferior to Leeper ones.

With the exception of some of their more unique gadgets, I would never buy any pika gear again.

Based on that, go with a yates or misty mountain harness.

You're right  I think I'll pass on this one and try to get a Yates Shield Harness. The only problem with those is that they offer +-6 sizes and it'll be mail order.

The Shield is a great harness and awesome for hanging around in, although gunked is right about the loops.

On the Yates hammer holster: figure out which side fits your hammer (one size is bigger than the other) and saw the other side off... this will let you sleep on one side anyway...

I bought the pika wall hammock and it works fine...I'm waiting for my adjustable daisy to slip (hasn't yet) but is showing signs of wear on the nylon. bought 3 aid hooks and have no complaints. Wasted money on their stick clip. Don't do the same, don't buy it. The order was correct and on time...My two cents.

My drill has a big cushy handle but the bits loosen up and the system is not as user friendly as the petzle rock pecker. also the leash wire busted quickly as the top of the drill mushroomed. that being said it has drilled a lot of holes and still hanging tough with my home made leash system.

Watched a pair bail the 1st pitch of Zodiac after taking a NASTY 30 footers because of pika cam hooks. has nothing to do with their harnesses. I don't like their hooks, but I think their little nut-tool hammer thingie is awesome.

I'll echo: they make some good specialized gear (toucans, et al) which has a place, but item for item, it seems to be better to go with another brand, i.e. leeper, fish, et al.

YATES shield by far the best harness made. I am on my 3rd one and is great for hanging (Aid, Rescue and instructing classes) Super comfy and never had trouble with numb legs even after hanging almost 2 hours as victim during a rescue scenario. I just bought the YATES Voyager for helo rescue work and have no doubt it will be just as comfy.
As far as PIKA, I have been using the aid pieces for years (toucans, Auks, Mallards, AArdvarks, and all the hooks) and have no complaints I have not used the Z-tons as I still have a good selection of Leepers and the Grivels are cheaper to buy. Keep in mind many small climber based companies will make some real good specialized products but will also tend to make some not so good items also (myself included) as we think we can make it cheaper, better or just improve on what is there or as in the case of aid climbing we make something for a particular problem. coylec

perhaps it could have been pilot error?

If they bailed before finishing the first pitch they can hardly blame it on a cam hook....sheesh how weak is that. "Yeah, I woulda made it up El Cap if it wasn't for that damn Pika cam hook..."HAHHA

Probly better that they bailed, if you are takilng 30 ft whippers of the first pitch of any wall you are doing something very wrong.

I think the curved Pika camhooks are the bomb, they slot right into angle pin scars way better then any leeper, and are totaly solid. Never used the straight ones...

Lambone, the fun - and/or funny part of this is

ya know the top of the crack - coming into the roof - you have that semi-inverted cam hook moving to a fully invented cam hook in the roof before the roof widens enough to take a cam.

anyway the guy was on the semi-inverted move - standing on my favorite pika - (not curving) cam hook - working on getting his second pika into the inverted roof (he had nothing but pika cam hooks - poor bugger).

Been on it for awhile and pop - (likely - flex pop). He zippered a piece or two and took a 30'

We asked him about the fall, the gear etc. and when he showed us the cam he popped on, we had a good laugh - poor guy going - what's so funny - ah - long RC.Com/Lambone story - but bottom line - I had had bad experiences with that cam hook and would not personally use it.

Chris offered to send him down his leeper's - but they decided to bail.

Now, me, after doing Zodiac - if all I had was those Pika hooks (not curved ones - I can not speak for these) but the flat - mini-diving board ones - Hell I would have bailed too!

It obviously was not going to get him through to the cammed roof (simple, bomber, non-scary leeper moves)! And as you know, lots of cam hooking ahead!

I chuckled - left mine on the floor boards of the car. Did lots of cam hooking, no problems.

I'm just seeing too many "operator" errors with that bad boy - were the same operator is not having issues with other types of hooks.

huh...

I didn't place any cam hooks on that pitch. And only mabye made 3 cam hook moves on the whole route...

I guess my point is there is allways more that one way to do things, and you can only lay so much blame on your gear.

Try one of those curved ones and let me know what youy think, they cost about 10 bucks, I'll buy it off you if you don't like it.

They keep alot more surface area in copntact with the pin scar, where as in a big pin scar a leeper may just have the two corners actually touching the rock.

100 ways to skin a cat I suppose,

must have just been me - I think I did like about 5 cam hook moves on the first pitch alone.

I cam hooked a lot on that route.

and least we forget - another look at a "picture perfect mini diving board placement"

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=28685

Judges scores for the 30' dive the guy on zodiac took off of this platform

8.9, 8.5, 8.7, 8.7, 8.6

And the crowd roars!

You really should keep yer toes together when using one o' dem F-ing Pika cam hooks. Yer scores will be much higher from the judges when you plummet. I kept my larger "curved" Pika cam hook for certain special occasions. Gave the other ones to the Rottweiler to use for chew toys. I think she gnawed through those faster than any rawhide she's had.
