I call "BS" on that story too, at least the way it is related above. Ropes do not break in use--ever. Please provide more details, including why this guy you met isn't dead from "breaking" these two ropes.

Curt

His first part about shot cores from stepping on them was BS too. Correlation does not equal causation. Lots of other mechanisms were at work.

Anyone who gets bent out of shape because somebody steps on their rope is a fool. Charging for the "crime" is pure greed.

If you put your rope in your backpack nobody stands on it.

If your rope is in your backpack, you aren't climbing.

Rob

I mean that piece of rope that is on the ground wile climbing.

I don't like my gear in the dirt. I broke an old gym rope moving a huge rock the other weekend. It was cool to see the sheath cut, and see the core withstand a few more good tugs with my truck.

whenever one of my ropes gets stepped on, I replace it. I mean, it is expensive, but my life is worth more than $160 or whatever. In order to be the best climber having the most fun, I must have a safe rope.

they'd have rules about what would happen if you fell on a route. First fall- you get lowered off and have another go. Go for the send. Second fall- you can hang for a minute, then get back on where you fell. Third fall- sit down and let someone else have a shot. No Hangdogging!!!
Greatest rule ever.

Now that is what I am talking about.
No Hangdogging. Just freaking climb it.
Amen brother.

I met a guy the other month who had 2 relatively new ropes break on him, ... Hmmm, I wonder what caused those two good ropes to pop on a sport climb...?

So, how dead was he after his ropes broke?

The great thing about the beer rule is that if you step on your own rope, you owe YOURSELF a beer.

yes--you can step on my rope if you are hot, female, single between the ages of 16-25 (a good wide range)
then the price for such a transgression is a date with me--but somehow i imagine i'll probably end up paying somehow in the future...

Step on my rope all you want. As long as you aren't wearing crampons, there's no way you're going to do as much damage as all the whippers I take. I try not to step on other people's ropes, but an accidental step onto one does negligble damage. No reason to bite someone's head off.

I do not believe that steping on a rope is unsafe, if you can carry one up El Cap, then I dont know why touching it with your cheap 5.10s will do to harm it.

The only reason the noob's face melted was because he climbs without a helmet, took a fall, and developed microfractures in his face. The only way he could've found out was through x-rays.

Lesson learned- wear your helmet! If not, at least retire your face after a severe fall.

a helmet is no defence against the mind-blowing wind coefficient experienced by a face as it screams toward the ground...faces melt regardless of whether a helmet is worn or not...

There are a few misconceptions floating around this thread:

- "damaging a rope with a marker is an urban legend"

Nylon 66 is rather susceptible to chemical damage, particulary from acids. Conventional magic markers are solvent based and should never be used except perhaps to mark rope or webbing ends, never in the center. But better to use a rope marker or laundry marker.

- "there is no way to force grit into a pristine new rope"

All kernmantle rope is a tight but porous weave with varying sizes of pics (those little squares of fibers at the surface), and it is not difficult to force fine grains of sharp crystalline silica sand into the weave of the sheath. Actually, as the sheath wears and gets "fuzzy" it is better protected from grit (like nose hairs keeping dust out of your nostrils)

- "the grit can damage the sheath"

It's not the sheath that's the problem. First it contributes only about 30% of the strength of the rope, and second it can be easily inspected for excessive wear or cut pics. The problem with grinding dust through the sheath is that it then lodges in the core, which is relied on for both strengh and for stretch and cannot be inspected without destroying the rope, and cuts at the fibers with every movement of the rope.

- "a little dirt isn't going to seriously weaken a rope"

A dynamic rope is weakened in two ways - by loss of strength due to wear (which isn't significant until the wear becomes extreme), and by loss of stretch or energy-absorbing ability by aging, UV exposure, overheating, heavy use, repeated falls with little recovery time, or by filling the voids between fibers with either water or grit.

- "a rope never fails in use"

While it's true that there are almost no cases of a climbing rope simply breaking under normal fall loads, a lead rope can "fail" in another way. If it is significantly compromised in its elastic ability to absorb impact loads, then it can cause either the anchors to fail, pieces of pro to pop, or place a larger impact force on the climber, causing bodily injury which might not have occured with an uncompromised dynamic rope.

So treat your rope with the utmost respect. It is your lifeline. Don't step on it, particulary in a muddy or dusty environment. And wash it, tied in a daisy chain or in a mesh bag, with mild soap or lifeline cleaner in a front-loading washer at least once a season.

Be safe and smart,
Robert
