I don't know if this is true or not, but I recently heard that some guitar players dip their hands in vinegar to make the skin stronger... I don't know why this would work... but who knows... does anyone do this? Or has anyone hear of this? If so, does it help with climbing so your hands dont get ripped up? LOL I used to have "pretty" hands (or so i'm told) but since I started climbing... well lets just say you wouldn't want to hold my hands! I love climbing, so it's not that big of a deal, but besides it looking kinda gross, it hurts! Any tips? Thanks! Becky

Tincture of Benzoin or a commercial prep called something like Tuffskin works like that. They are sticky and unsightly, but do work.

You're probabally not gonna belive this, but it really works. Try it... Mix equal parts of: Whiskey Ice Add a tiny splash of sweet vermouth (just to take the edge off) Drink it. My grandpa says that it'll make you a man and put hair on your chest. Maybe then you'll stop your petty little whining so you can sack up and climb.

having pretty hands and being a climber can't belong in the same sentence. i just got back from 2 weekends of some awesome climbing and have no skin left on my fingertips and calluses. if a guy can't stand holding my manky hand then he can f*ck off. :D

My Gramps said the same thing about his coffee: A hideous brew of grounds, an egg shell, the stub of a cigar, some salt, and brewed under a full moon. "Drink it black, son... it'll make a man outta ya and put hair on yer chest." 25 years later, I still drink my coffee black. No hair, though.

Does the secret service know that this thread has been hijacked? It started out talking about vinegar and nasty hands and ended up being about grandpa's and wiskey and hairy chests... Try Climb-on Bar. You can either go to their web-page: http://www.climbonproducts.com or trango's page: http://www.trango.com/...catnum=22&itemnum=69 hope that helps the original question. And no, I haven't heard about the vinegar trick.

What has worked for me is a trick my volleyball coach told me to use on my feet to prevent blisters. Soack in Salt water for about 10 mins a night for a week or so and it toughens the skin up without drying the shit out of it. Something to do with the pores being over saturated, not too sure really just know it works, Peace

I like mountainchick82's attitude. And this is why we should be dating other climbers. Climbers should only breed with other climbers! Keep it in the species! Just kidding.

This stuff is the best for toughening up your tips. I put it on 3-4 times a day and then after bouldering on the rough stone at Pawtuckaway and Lincoln Woods, and I can stay out twice as long. Iron Hand It might look expensive, but a 4 oz bottle will last at least 6 months.

O.K. Now I feel bad for hijacking a totally worthwhile question... A few years back I had a lot of trouble toughening up my hands. I don't remember who recommended it, but some guy told me he toughens up his hands by soaking them in extrememly cold water. So after climbing, I would run cold water over my hands, or soak them in the rivers (they are really cold out west) If nothing else, it felt good. By the end of the summer, my skin was pretty tough. It could have been a few other things though. More experience, better footwork, less thrutching, more hand strength. I don't want to talk down to you, but maybe you just need more experience, maybe you are pulling too hard. Anybody can develop gorrilla like strength, and muscle their way through climbs, but their hands either have to be iron, or they get tore up. You know that feeling of melting off a hold? That's your skin abrading off. If you develop better contact strength, this diminishes, and your body has a chance to develop thicker skin. Try to think about climbing smoother, more in control, don't pull harder, pull smarter. Watch a very good female climber, pay attention to her body position, especially hips and footwork. It'll make you a better climber anyway, and it worked for me. Advice, advice, advice. blah

gds- Your right Tinture of benzion would work.... I am a Ultrarunner. I run 50 and 100 mile trail races. i use it on my feet to make them tough so I dont get blisters.. I'm sure it would work the same way on your hands... You can buy it any medical supply place.. Cheers, Catra http://www.rocknrun.net

I've never heard about vinegar, but lots of guitar players use rubbing alcohol on their finger tips. The fast evaporation sucks the moisture out of your skin. Kind of like an anti lotion. Eric Clapton used to do this. He says it gives you elephant skin in a few weeks. Just dip the tips twice a day. I have no idea how this would work for rock climbing but it sure works for guitar.
