By popular demand, USA Climbing has decided to offer the first Junior National Bouldering Championship open to all USAC members under the age of 19. This competition will be held at the Philadelphia Rock Gym in Oaks, PA.

Junior Climbers 12 and over, from across the country, will compete for selection to the first ever US Junior Bouldering Team. In addition, the Philadelphia Rock Gym will host the first Youth Bouldering Nationals for climbers under the age of 11.

Winners from all age groups will receive national recognition for their skills and accomplishments, including awards sponsored by The North Face. In addition, there will be tons of raffle prizes, food, music and some of the best bouldering offered in the East!!

Who can attend?
The competition is open to all registered USAC members under the age of 19 who have participated in at least one (1) USAC sanctioned youth event in 2004.

When is it?
The Nationals is split into two events (times are subject to change):
Junior Nationals: Qualifier: Fri, June 11 -- 3pm to 9pm
Finals: Sat, June 12 -- 6pm to 10pm
Youth Nationals: Check In: Sat, June 12 -- 9am to 10am
Comp: Sat, June 12 -- 10am to 2pm

Award Ceremony for Junior Nationals will occur Sunday afternoon. Youth Nationals will receive their awards on Saturday.

What does pre-registration* cost?
Pre-Qualified Junior (12 and Up) Competitors: $40.00
Pre-Qualified Youth (11 and Under): $30.00

Not Pre-Qualified Junior: $45.00

Not Pre-Qualified Youth: $35.00
*Pre-registered climbers receive a T-shirt!!

What would it cost at the door?
Junior (12 and Up Competitors): $50.00
Youth (11 and Under): $40.00
Spectators (Junior Finals, Saturday night): $5.00

How do I register?
Competitors may register by mail or by phone. Registration forms and waivers are available on our website. Or you may call 610-666-7673 to register by phone.
Pre-registration ends June 4, 2004. Registrations will be taken at the door up until Friday, June 11 for the Juniors and Saturday, June 12 for the Youth, so long as space allows. Competitors must pre-register in order to receive a T-shirt.

How do I qualify for Finals?
There are two ways to qualify for Junior National Finals on Saturday, June 12:

A) In Region/Pre-Qualified: Climbers who have competed in one of the three (3) JIBS Pilot Regions--Capital, New England, Ohio River Valley--and who have satisfied their minimum requirements, will be eligible for selection straight to Finals, based on the JIBS rules. Please see the USAC website or contact a JIBS representative directly for more information on in-region selection and pre-qualification for Nationals.

B) Out of Region/Not Pre-Qualified: Climbers from outside the Pilot Districts, or, who have failed to meet the requirements for pre-qualification straight to Finals, must compete in the Qualifying Round on Friday, June 11. The top climbers in this round will then proceed to Finals on Saturday night.

What is the Qualifying Round?
The Qualifying Round will be run as a World Cup format qualifier. Competitors will be required to attempt two (2) to three (3) boulder problems with five minutes to climb and five minutes to rest on each. Problems will be scored based on highest point reached. Competitors will be selected to finals (along with those who have pre-qualified through the JIBS Pilot) based on the overall scores on these two problems. All 12 and up competitors who fail to Pre-Qualify through the JIBS Pilot season must attend the Qualifying Round to be considered for Finals.
Running order for competitors registered for the Qualifying round will be posted on Thursday, June 10. Any competitors registering at the door on Friday, June 12, will be automatically appended to the end of the existing running order. So register early!!

What is the Format for Junior Finals?
The format for the 12 and Over finals will be a modified World Cup Format:
Climbers will climb between three (3) and four (4) World Cup style "on-sight" problems for high point. Climbers will have 5 minutes to complete these problems, with 5 minutes rest in between each problem. Competitors will be scored on the highest point reached during their five minute window. Bonus points may be awarded for flashing a problem.
Final Rankings will be based on an aggregate score for all problems climbed in Finals.

What is the difference between the Youth Nationals and the Junior Nationals?
Youth Nationals is an event dedicated to 11 and Under competitors. Youth Nationals will be held as an open format (i.e. local bouldering format) on Saturday morning. Unlike the Junior Nationals, the Youth Nationals has no Qualifying Round. Entrance to the competition is open to anyone who satisfies the minimum criteria. Champions will be selected for the 11 and Under age groups directly from the results of this competition. There will be no Finals. Although the competition is open to all USAC climbers (see above), only those climbers who have satisfied the minimum requirements for the JIBS Pilot will be eligible for National Rankings. All other competitors will receive awards based on their performance at the competition.

Who will be selected to the Junior National Bouldering Team?
For the Juniors (12 and Up), this is a "winner-take-all" event. The Junior Team for each age group will be selected out of the top three scores from Finals in each category.

Why have the requirements changed?
There are two main reasons for the changes to the JIBS Pilot. First, we have received a tremendous amount of interest from competitors who were outside the Pilot Regions. Based on this groundswell, we felt that it would be in the best interest of the organization to offer an opportunity for out of region competitors to at least qualify for Finals.
Second, a cancellation toward the middle of the 2004 Pilot Season threw off many climbers' schedules, forcing some in-region competitors to have to choose between qualifying for Difficulty Events, and qualifying for the Bouldering Championships.
It has always been the mission of the USAC to promote and encourage all aspects of competition climbing; therefore, rather than force such a choice, we decided to give competitors an option to qualify, if they failed to meet their minimums. All competitors who do qualify through the Pilot Rules, will go straight to Finals, and receive a discounted entry fee. For reasons of precedent, we felt this was the best option given the circumstances.
As always, the USAC and JIBS appreciate the support of their members, and welcome any feedback. Please feel free to contact us directly with any questions or comments at www.usclimbing.org.

What's all this about food?
As courtesy to our guests, the PRG Parent's Committee has generously offered to provide boxed lunches to competitors and spectators at a nominal price. These lunches will contain your choice of Turkey or Cheese sub (we call them "hoagies" in PA), chips and a drink. The cost for each box is $5.00, and they will be available for competitors and guests on both Friday and Saturday. Although there will be some boxes available the day of the comp, participants are strongly urged to Pre-Register and request their lunches on the registration form. That way, you will insure that you are fed well.
All proceeds from the Boxed Lunch Sales go to benefit Junior Boulderers

I just wanted to add a note of thanks to Dave Rowland and Jeff Jenkins and their volunteers and routesetters for running a fantastic comp -- which even ended on time -- a first I think for climbing comps. You guys did an amazing job and I am proud that my son could be a part of it.

who won?

I have not seen the results from PRG yet. The comp was by age so there are several winners. I don't remeber them all. Hopefully PRG will put the results up soon.

I'll get the results tonight and post. I do have a photo of the Junior national bouldering team (first-thrid place winners, by age group). I am proud to say that my daughter iamnotender took 5th place and my son oakleemax took 4th place.
Look here later tonight for results...
