OK, I've been bouldering for a few months, but have yet to learn about all the different types of climbing there are. These might seem like dumb questions but this is a beginer forum right??? What is trad? What is sport? What are the differences, and what are other types of climbing that I might not know about?

Sport Climbing is where there is preplaced protection in the form of bolts with hangers on them usually placed in a row up an established route. As you climb up a face you clip a carabiner into the hanger and then your rope into the carabiner, catching you in the case of a fall. The botls are usually between 5 and 20 feet apart so you will not take too big of a fall.

Trad climbing, or traditional climbing is where you carry and place your own protection as you go. The hardware you use for this type of climbing usually consists of stoppers or nuts, hex's, cams or camming devices, or pitons. This type of climbing usually goes up a feature where it is easy to place these items, like a big crack going up the rock.

Then there is aid climbing in which the protection is used to support the climber's weight while setting the next piece of protection.

Trad climbing (or sport for that matter) in which the pro is used only in case of a fall is called "free climbing". This is distinct from "solo" climbing or "free solo" which doesn't involve a rope. There is, however, also "roped solo" climbing which requires special gear or technique to self-belay.

Of course, there's ice climbing, and mixed rock and ice climbing, and there's vertical caving which involves descending and ascending a fixed line, sometimes with deviations and/or rebelays which require changing from one rope or one section of a rope to another.

Some folks climb buildings and other structures (is there a name for this?), some climb the social ladder to keep up with the Jones, and some just have a jones for climbing...
