I find that sometimes on Trad and even sport a bit I need to use my teeth to hold the gear for a second or two. Does anyone have any horror stories about using your teeth IN CLIMBING. I haven't chipped a tooth or anything, just wordered if anyone dropped a peice, slobbered on it, you know all the CLIMBING related stuff. CLIMBING RELATED HAS TO DO WITH CLIMBING WHILE YOU WERE CLIMBING... Cheers

Worst thing for me was dropping my quickdraw 15 feet onto my belayers head. I constantly use my teeth, often I'll bite my draw before I get to the bolt so I save energy clipping it.

Not really. But I did fall once with the rope in my teeth. Opened my mouth and it came out, no problem. I've probably read about people loosing teeth that way though.

A friend of mine was tugging on a cam to check its placement. It obviously wasn't good cause it popped out, hit him in the teeth chipping his front tooth..

A guy at my gym was leading, and while going to clip the third bolt, bit the rope to hold it while he pulled more slack. He fell with the rope in his mouth and tore his entire palette out.

In reply to: No way! He was painting, too! Damn. Hardcore. hahha  happy little clouds... I can't get enough of that taste the dirty rope leaves in my mouth, I always use my teeth when going for high clips or if there is alot of rope drag. One time I missed the rope though, and bit my knuckle...was black and blue for 2 days. Need to work on my hand/mouth coordination I guess.

I see tons of climbers pulling the rope to clip by putting the first 4/5 of the rope pull into the teeth then grabing for the last 1/5. I've done it several times. Never thought what would happen if I fell right when it was in the teeth.

Your teeth are generally much stronger and more resilient than you might think... Hell, I've actually used my teeth to hold the tow-rope baton while waterskiing before! http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=31797

I bit a girl's butt while CLIMBING. I told her the next lead was her's (5.9R on a hot day) and she told me to "Bite my a$$! That's your lead." I asked permission to gnaw on aforementioned bum, it was granted and afterwhich, racked up and lead said pitch. She didn't let me bite direct skin though. But she was wearing spandex (the only gender I will climb with who is wearing spandex) so it was almost skin. Thank you for letting me share. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

I just put on enough pressure to keep the rope in my mouth, not sever it. Here's a question. Do you put more or less pressure on the rope if it's your partner's rope? I put less because If I were to bite too hard into their rope, they probabley yank on it or something. :D

tgreene, it looks like you've bit the rope 14 inches above your tie in. Necessary? Oh, nice use of the belay card outdoors!

Biting the rope there took some of the drag out of for clipping, since it wasn't pulling down so hard. As for "the belay card", I have no clue as to what you are talking about.

I Have never bitten the rope while leading, there is no reason to if you are doing it right. my brother and a friend of mine both do it at like every clip and its getting to be a bad habit. i have gotten to the point where i just want keep them from putting the rope in their mouth by shortroping them and making them fall! that will teach them.

In reply to: I Have never bitten the rope while leading, there is no reason to if you are doing it right. ....what do you mean by doing it right? everybody chooses the way they clip! I do however agree mostly with you. I will only use this biting rope 'technique' if I at a good rest and the clip is high. Otherwise I will almost always climb to where the draw is at waist height. No need to pull up any slack.....no need to make your fall longer and potentially dangerous. If you clip at the waist you have used much less rope to clip than if you pull up an extra 40-100cm. ....I have wondered if there is an invention.....a little plastic hook....for those people who really need to put the rope in their teeth.....they can place the rope they have pulled up on the hook, instead of their teeth. If you fall the rope is not in your mouth..... ....just a thought. I've used my teeth to grimace, smile widely and say 'sh' and 'f' words while climbing!!!! ....Dave

I pushed a hex into a bottlenecking crack with my toungue on friday...was totally bomber after I pushed it in that 1/2 an inch...funny stuff... On teeth though...I use my teeth to hold up trad gear all the time right before I clip it in to the rope. Everyonce in a while I'll bite the rope but those times are far and few between.

At Smith Rock I saw a guy on a 10d Trad route with rope in mouth and messed his mouth pretty good. No teeth missing, but not a happy camper either. A good samaritan had to retrieve gear. That took longer than dragging his butt out of the area. I try to limit when i bite, but I have it in the bag of tricks.
