Hi all! I'm just an early beginner as i started just two or three months ago with outdoor climbing. I was wondering what's the best way to improve or gain strength. Is it bouldering? A friend of mine told me it was better to practice some bouldering before actually starting so it would be easier afterwards on the real rock. Hope to get your advise! Thanks!

To gain strength? .... CLIMB!! Boulders, rock, indoors... Just climb!

Yep, just go out and climb. No matter what style of climbing you do you will benefit from the experience.

True, just climb. But it appears that you have options on what type of climbing to do and from my understanding bouldering will build strength more than sport climbing.

If you are one of those people like myself that unfortunately work more than play, then a good idea is to get or build a finger board or if you have the space and budget build yourself you own wall. I have my own wall at home that takes up a double garage and can still park in it. When I get home from work I spend an hour or so on it and what is great is that when I get bored with the routes I can just change them. Great way to build up the strengh for when you are able to climb outdoors. Rock on.

read lots of books instead of climbing that way when you spray all over the web you'll sound believable. (you'll be "good" with actually having to be good) just ask b_g about it j/k ben

i think that bouldering is the best way to gain strength and technique. that is not the only though. bouldering is a little different that ascents. the best thing is that you can boulder without any help. ascents need partners and those can be hard to come by.

maybe i'm completely wrong... but bouldering is very different from rock climbing, isn't it? Do u all think that if u practice bouldering it improves your style? In which way? Sorry if my question is too stupid!

hey hoonah; If you wanna develop power, you boulder. If U wanna develop endurance, you do longer climbs (multi pitch stuff). If U wanna develop power/endurance, you do stuff in between. I like to shift back and forth between whiich of the above I'm developing. work one for a few weeks, than move on to another. many people think that you should cycle between them like this; 1) endurance. 2) power 3) power-endurance. That works just fine. You get better from each of them, but in different ways. Unless you're gonna be a strict specialist (eg; you are just a boulderer, and don't do any other forms) you should definitely move back and forth among the three areas of strength building outlined above. And don't forget to stretch. Sretching will help you to stay a good athlete when you're an old fart like me.

Hope this helps... For a Newbie such as yourself, I would most definitely recommend indoor climbing as a good starting point to your climbing career. This would most definitely go along with an introductory lesson to climbing from an instructor of this gym. Also, I would highly recommend doing some moderate outdoor climbing with a very experienced climber (just so he/she can show you the ropes). If it's strength that you're after however, then I would recommend strength training with indoor/outdoor bouldering. Good luck!

don't make the same mistake every other new climber makes! you should not be climbing any more than 3 times a week and only two of those three should be hard work outs. your body, read TENDONS will take time, time, time to adjust to your "shock loading" them. stay away from finger boards or campus boards for a least 120 days. if you feel any twinges in your fingers, elbows, or palms, STOP, REST, ICE, AND STRETCH. if you want to be climbing healthy for the next ten years, don't let your enthuasism or ego damage your tendons now.

Hear, hear, moonshine. I agree ALMOST Fully. I have one difference: If you wanna be climbing hard 30 years from now (not just 10), realize that you shouldn't train too much. just a few times a week for the power stuff. endurance climbing you can do a bit more, but watch your step. It takes a decade to get your tendons to act as if they were titanium. Don't blow your career by pulling too much, too hard, too soon.

huh? cool man, career.. hahaha.... nice advice, I have been bouldering "non-stop" for conservative 3 days... now feeling out of strength... can't even hold a can of coke properly..haha

Thanks so much for all your advises! I'm so grateful! I see that all of u take climbing as a part of your lifes, don't u? Maybe climbing is more common or popular there in the States than here in Spain. At least i don't have many friends who go climbing but maybe it's because i'm just a newbie. Definitely what everyone else said, climbing is the best way. But if you just want to workout, use the hangboard things that are usually at every indoor gym.

My opinion, and this is just my opinion. I believe the best way to build raw strength is to boulder.If you know how to lead then that is one of the best ways to gain endurance.Another good way to gain endurance is to traverse a lot.Endurance is one of my biggest problems.Hope this helps!!!
