Well which category would Top Roping be considered. I know the three mainly refer to leading, but would top rope fall in one?

You can toprope in sport, trad, and aid. Since you generally are thinking of free climbing (without the use of gear to get up a route), your sense of TR would eliminate aid. In general, TRing gets lumped into face climbing versus crack climbing.

None of the above. That's kinda like asking if a bike is a car or a plane. It's neither. I'll go for aid on top rope, but that's a different question. How do you protect yourself (lead/toprope/nothing)? vs How do you ascend the rock (free/aid)? As Maculated said, you _can_ top rope anything, but then IMO you're top roping. I top roped a sport climb. I've also top roped really short routes (25-30') which some might call boulder problems. I wasn't sport climbing or bouldering, I was top roping. I dunno if that's what she meant, but that's my take on it. Rob

In reply to: In general, TRing gets lumped into face climbing versus crack climbing. What? There is no difference in TR'ng crack vs. face. I think you are TR'ng when you use a TR. Lots of cracks are climbed using TR's. For example here in AZ lots of folks TR at Paradise Forks. Yes he cracks can be led, but if you set up a TR on them then you are TR'ng/ No?

Sometimes I go climbing on rocks. Sometimes I put a rope on when I climb the rocks. Regardless of whatever the hell I was doing I was still climbing the rocks though. When I got home and was asked where I was I say "I was climbing on the rocks." Labels and numbers are bad m'kay.... Go climb on rocks. Peace.

In reply to: In reply to: In general, TRing gets lumped into face climbing versus crack climbing. What? There is no difference in TR'ng crack vs. face. There's a world of difference in technique, of course. I think the theme here is that there are lots of different ways to slice up "climbing", and many of them overlap. The short answer is: No. Top roping does not fall into one category from the set sport, trad, and aid. Next. Rob

Rob Yes I agree that the climbing technique will be different but the means of protecting the climb is identical.

Honestly I agree with you entirely, but since we are unfortunetly in the minority, I figured I at least try to understand what everyone was talking about.

I was trying to stay the hell out of this, but there still seems to be some confusion. Sport Climbs....... Trad Climbs........ Top Roped Climbs (which can include both the above) plus others like TR boulder problems....... Can all be done either Free, or by using Aid. If you are climbing by any one of the styles above--and you weight the rope or pull on gear, you have invalidated a Free ascent possibility by employing a point of Aid. Curt

Some confusion may be a result of the way that many people utalize a top rope belay setup. If Im a gumbie and want that super tight belay that helps me get that move, is that free top roping or top aid roping...or am I missing something?
