I am finding myslef guilty of roll after roll of buttshots. I guess there is no way around it if you want to climb as well. I suppose I can get pictures of people following(woopie), but to capture someone leading, and not be part of the climbing team I guess is not going to happen. I suppose this is obvious, but I want to climb and want to take great pictures as well. I suppose I am going to have to suck it up sometimes and just go along to take pictures (that seems bad). I guess I am not really seeking advise (it is welcome, but I don't know what there is to say) just complaining.

Climb with another party and have the follower in the top party take shots of the leader in the second. Works like a charm and it's a lot more social than dicking around with a boom...

There are lots of ways around this, they just take some effort and common sense. And yes, to get decent shots you're just going to have to sacrifice some climbing for yourself. You don't have to throw out the whole day to shoot though, and if you're strategic (namely, climbing with an odd-sized group) you can still get in as much climbing as everybody else. If rigging above a leader is too much of a logistical pain in the ass, then seek out higher ground that has a good view of the climb- ledges, hills. And if the whole area around the route is pretty, just get way behind the action and get a nice panoramic/scenic. It'll be a "back shot" (the butt shot's cooler big brother) but plenty of them can be pretty good if the scenery is worthy.

It can also be easy to get good shots by climbing the route beside another route and shooting as you go or rapping back down, etc.

I guess it will be the "butt shooters thread." Wow, that sounds bad.

The way I handle this problem is to either lead the climb (if its easy and I'm not afraid about falling and my camera gear coming unclipped or something), or have someone lead it, you toprope it and hook in to the anchors at the top. Then drop the rope and have a third person (if you have one) lead it or make the first person lead it again.
