So how about it? Just wondering how many people out here would want to climb an 8000er. And if so, which one(s)?

As for me, yeah, I think it would be great to climb one. I'm thinking Cho Oyo and/or the Gasherbrums (I and II). I wouldnt touch Everest with a thirty foot cheater stick...

I think that because it's 8000m or higher, a mountain will not necessarily draw me to it, instead its asthetics and choice routes would by far outweigh my descision to climb it than its overall height.
Just because Everest is the tallest, means nothing to me in comparison to a mountain 2000m lower, but asthetically more beautiful or technically more demanding (eg. Ama Dablam or Fitzroy in Patagonia or the Cassin Ridge on Denali).
More height just means more money, and that is reason enough for me to steer away. More traffic (and consequenses of it) is also a factor that would have me repulsed and would not want to contribute to.
If I had enough money, could make an alpine-style ascent and had ample time to acclimatise, I would pick Nanga Parbat or Makalu. But realistically I'd venture into other lower, more technical faces and ridges in the Himalaya, Patagonia, Africa, South and North America first.

Yes:)

And I would like to do it alpine style. I have nowhere near enough experience yet, but when I feel ready, an 8000m peak alpine style would be something I would love to attempt. Everest would be okay to me, but I wouldn't want to be just another one of the "sheeple" trudging to the top.

Alas, my summit attempt is still about 10 years and many thousands of dollars away:( It just means I get to climb more until there:)

Climb an 8000 meter peak? Hell yeh. Everest without a second thought. K2 on the other hand would require some serious thought.

too much to risk and too expensive...but, 7000m seems appealing, if there is something esthetic about the route so much the better.

i've been close to 6,000 (one day from a high camp) in bolivia andthe route was way cool (cabeza de condor , ridge route).

i am now planning to go to the tien shan mountains next summer to climb the beautiful khan tengri hopefully by the marble rib.

beautiful country, cheap, safe and interesting.

any joiners?

jeff

No. For me climbing is about the enjoyment of moving over rock or ice, the aesthetics of the line.

Hmm...

Definately 6000m

Possibley 7000m

I havent really looked at that many 8000's

I would want to do everest, but it's far too expensive and overcrowded. You would have to pay me to go up K2. maybe a less popular, less deadly peak..

No. climbing isn'tt about the elevation or the numbers. Ditto what malabarista said.

I'd side with the aesthetics-first camp, but if someone's offering, I'd jump at chance to do something big.

Without a doubt...

I ahve wanted to climb Everest since before it was "cool". Just because everybody else is doing it, does nto mean my goals have changed. Of course I would want to climb the Kanchung face... just to make it interesting.

Any of the 8000 meter peaks, any of the 7 summits, any of the 14ers... anything. Even if it is an easy climb (i.e. Kili) I still love to hike, and I love the feeling of being in the mountains. Its not about how cool people think I am - its about how great I feel at the top of a rock.

Fuckin A right! I would LOVE to climb one...

Only if I were naked wearing nothing but a penis gourd and with a small pachyderm strapped to my back would I ever do it though.

I absolutely want to. I don't know if circumstances will ever permit or if I would have the drive to adequately train for it, but I definitely "want to".
