A few friends and I are thinking of heading south in August to El Potrero Chico. Does anyone know where I can land some topos? Any other beta on campgrounds, etc. would be appreciated as well. Thanks. Joe

if you go there in August you will must likely BOIL. I've been there in May and it was 95-100 degrees. The Potrero is a fantastic place, but is definitely a WINTER climbing destination. If you do go in August, have fun and bring LOTS of water Ditto on the Google comment, plenty of "how to" info on the web for potrero

http://www.elpotrerochico.com/ Has the travel directions I have always used, travel beta (take the toll road), and some beta on the place. You can stay at pretty much whever you want. The pogoda has camp spots, and the posada has some camp spots and also rooms you can rent for cheap and there's also Homero's which is the website that I gave you. As far as getting topos, find Tammy. You can usually find her at Homero's, just ask, trust me, you'll find her and I think that the guides are around $15, but highly accurate and worth it. There are some place that sit in the shade all day long that you will be able to hit up, but it is gonna be hot there. So much good, cheap food there. Have fun and drink plenty of cuaguamas and eat at Checo's

If you can climn in Joshua Tree in the summer, you will probably do OK down here. As said, camping in La Posada has become typical, Homero´s was the first one, La Pagoda, while it has a pool, is used by people doing BBQ´s most of the weekends (it is rented for that purpose) so there is lots of noise and people that makes your stuff feel not so safe. Cerro Gordo is open, does not have a lot of people. There is a casita near Cerro Gordo with a small pool, sometimes it is up for rent, depends on how many people are coming down with you, if it is worth it. Normal camping prices were $4, should still be the same. Magic Ed is hanging around most of the weekends, look for a light green 60-70´s suburban, he´ll help you out with the guidebook. He posts here often. We climb in Potrero often during the summer it is just a matter of following the shade and drinking lots of fluids. You can e-mail me with more questions if you want miguel_maracas@yahoo.com.mx Miguel

The free road is nowhere near as bad as the beta on elpotrerochico.com makes it sound. Keep your 40$.

Thats true the free road isn't too bad but the pay road is a lot faster. Also you can drink the water at homero's and not get sick. ~Rob

In reply to: The free road is nowhere near as bad as the beta on elpotrerochico.com makes it sound. Keep your 40$. Basically when you travel the toll road, your money goes to keeping it maintained and also to some sort of insurance if you happen to wreck or break down. Wish I had more info about this because I'm not sure exactley what it is, but Magic Ed told me to travel on it because of this....... plus it's faster

Thanks for all of the beta. Looking forward to this trip. EPC seems very well visited, but I still have some questions regarding theft in the area. Is this a problem in EPC?
