I just acquired a Metolious Bomb Shelter ledge, which is quite bulky, so I am curious how people carry their ledges on the longer approaches? Does one try to stick it in a back-pack or just carry it in its own haul bag?

Jeeze dude...STFU, this is a nice friendly place, go back to your Sport Climbing Forum and start calling people morons...If you knew anything about aid climbing you'd realize that that post was kinda funny...
Anyway,
on the approach, leave the Haulbag in the CAR and carry your portaledge and everything else up in a nice comfy backpack like a dana design or something as plush. save your back/hips and everything else...carry your haulbag up empty with maybe a waterbottle or something.
On the descent you can use several different methods:
-Vertical inside the Haulbag-best but rarely fits- keep it close to your back.
-Duct tape it to the out side of the haulbag. Not bad but uses alot of tape and can leave duct residue all over the ledge haul sac
-rig some slings and shoulder it like a big bazooka
-strap it on top- front to back works better then sideways, still bound to get caught in the manzanita bushes...

Have your partner carry it and let him worry about it. :wink: OR, you could just recruit other climbers to help you with schlepping loads to the base of the climb. You could entice them to do this by offering to teach them something about aid climbing when they arrive at your destination. If you're good, you can even get them to haul a couple of pitches for you by explaining that they could learn first hand how to use some neat-o whizz-bang hauling technique if they jug up the rope to help you haul the first few pitches.
Short of that, I always stuff mine vertically into the haul bag and just pack gear around it while letting it stick up through the top of the haul bag.

I am no expert, but I have carried my bombshelter up 6 or so approaches.
Carry it in your haul bag...hump the other loads in more comfortable packs, when you carry the haul bag, the ledge will take up space but is not so dense that it will cause the haul bag to crush you under its weight.
Pack stuff around it so it dosn't shift around on you.
Allign it diagonally across your back so it sticks up past one shoulder. Having it in the middle means it taps you in the back of the head and is as annoying as (*&#&^*^!.
Attach a sling to the end that is sticking up past your shoulder, this will allow you to "guide" the end of it around low tree branches or whatever, instead of you having to crawl around in the dirt like an idiot.
Then throw the f-ing thing away and get one of those little fish ledges that is the size of a lawn chair and carry it in your pocket. Have you seen these things? Sheesh, had I known.

And, sometimes the owner will let those other climbers borrow it for their first wall.
