Re: attractive guys leading: the wool hats I could do without, but the no shirt thing is fine by me!

I call my climbing partner's wool hat the "yarn helmet." I wish he'd just wear a proper helmet, but he's really attached to the hat.

Last weekend I went climbing near tutrle rock w/o webing or any anchor equipment, instead I threw the rope around a nice looking horn of rock at the top for anchor I noticed the rope was a little frayed and that it took quite a bit of weight to take up slack on either end. was this really stupid?

Can someone explain the no-shirt wool hat thing?

Yes, more explaining needed. Here in Southern Illinois it's 90 degrees and 100% humidity, and about half the guys are wearing wool stocking caps still. I shave my head every summer to try to cool down, and I'm still too freaking hot.

It goes along with the "tribal tattoos thing" the piercings and the visible boxers peeking out of the pants (often baggy. eewwwww) .

It's called fashion. :?

Odd enough in the gym I use there's no such obsession about beanies.

I climb in pants and a tanktop/sports bra year round. In the cold months, I wear a beanie, too.

I take my shirt off because I sweat a lot,

That seems like a good reason to keep your shirt on, out of consideration of the rest of us who might be in proximity to your slimy self. Skeevy bastard.

Look people, there's good naked, and there's bad naked. If your allegedely male, you fall in the latter catagory.

everyone knows that the reason you have to wear a hat with no shirt is because of weight. think about it. a beanie weighs a lot less than a big old heavy shirt. the only time i take of my shirt is when i'm ready to redpoint my super ultra sick hard route/boulder prob. the weight just holds me back. 8^) 8^)

hahaha, damn, you pretty much described me right there, it is a rare time when you'll see me climbing with a shirt on, and an even rarer one when you'll see me wearing pants instead of capris (and even then I roll up the bottom of the pants).
I tend to sweat a lot, and especially in SoCal it often causes the shirt to stick and/or get some sexy sweat marks :? Although I have to say that if I'm climbing trad I'll weat a shirt, cause the metal from biners and pro is often very frickin' cold on my skin, so unless it's baking outside, I'll wear a shirt on trad.
As for the Capris, they tend to be baggier than shorts (in my experience), which allows for less hot stickiness when it gets hot, and they save your knees from scratches, and I don't have to think twice about poppin' a knee-bar.
Although in all honesty I'm starting to wear shirts more often (must be to hide my 9-5 job enduced gut  )

My whole back is a tribal tattoo. I like to show it off. As for capris, um shorts and knee scabs work for me.

I wear a wifebeater as a sweatwipe with whatever shorts are handy. I understand being hot and sweaty, but how does it help your climbing if you have to wipe the sweat out of eyes with your hand? Now, a sweaty, slippery hand is drenched instead. If you can climb shirtless, it's either not hot or humid enough where you live. I do like to climb shirtless indoors and in the cooler months, though :P

c'mon kids, we're all good christians here. remember; god created your body and you should be ashamed of it (especially you woman - don't forget original sin).
its simple; wear a shirt or go to hell.

oh yeah, i think the capris will just get you purgatory.

It feels good... so I do it.

Many times I don't take off my shirt as I don't want people to think I just want to show off.

hmmmm... I gotta stop that.

A shirt usually gets in my way. I like the freedom I feel when I'm not wearing one. Usually I climb alone or with a few friends so taking my shirt off isn't for showing off. In the gym, it's just really really hot. No one goes to my gym anyway, it's usually empty.

yeah. hardcore boulderers do this. see, a hardcore boulderer's nipples are iron, and they can withstand being shirtless even in the middle of winter. their ears and head, however, are sensitive to the slightest draft, so the beanie never comes off.

quite simple really...

I'm skinny enough that everyone knows I'm not taking my shirt off to show the bod. Although to make me sound more attractive, I should start using the term "wiry" instead. Yes, I think I will do that. The shirt off thing is more of a habit than anything else.

By the way, I'm wiry. Say it with me now...

i take my shirt off because i am rediculously hot (that's sexy, to avoid confusion); however, i've recently taken to wearing a bare-midriff muscle shirt, très old school. I do not wear capris or knickers anymore because they are soo mid-90's, though I would sure like to get my hands on some pink polka-dotted lycra. then I'll have to climb 5.14.
In reply to:

i will be the first serious answer to this question. sometimes physical exhertion makes wearing a shirt absolutely unbearable, but i have fucking terrible circulation in my ears, so i choose to wear a beanie... gotta problem with that? let's take it outside beeyatch. 8^)
