I was recently blasted by a adware trojan, and now I'm running all kinds of Adware preventions. My computer should be clean, but I keeping getting warnings from Spybot S&D regarding banners on this website. "Doubleclick" is a name that pops up on a regular basis.
Now I'll save the long ethical discussion regarding Adware, and will leave it at this: I have stopped viewing other websites due to malicious adware.
Does RC.com knowingly participate in uploading Advertising Software to users computers?

For the zillionth time, DoubleClick is an ad network that displays banners. We don't do popups and we don't do spyware. This isn't a fucking porn site (we'd make a lot more money if it was).

I don't get anything spywarish from this site. Gotta be careful about the kinds of sites you visit though. Can't ever be too secure about that.
Man, if me and the person responsible for the spyware that has been on my computer before ever got in a room together, only one person would come out. :evil:

Perhaps DoubleClick is including Adware type scripts in their banners? Is this feasable? I'm really not sure. I've grown really weary in the last week. My computer was about 10 minutes from getting formatted, but I decided to sleep on it, and now have 5 programs running to keep that crap out.

No need to get pissy tim, I feel that this is a reasonable consern. If unscrupulous advertisors are including adware in their banners, and using RC.com as a vehicle to distribute it there are serious issues here.

I run several spyware sniffers and despite the fact that I visit this site almost daily, the only spyware I'm getting comes from porno sites.

You have no idea. I went to the mat with Trevor when Tribal Fusion was displaying popups. You and I both know I'd leave the site and never come back if we started peddling Gator ads just to make a buck.
What irritates me, however, is that the anti-spyware vendors are hardly more scrupulous than the spyware vendors. DoubleClick uses cookies to try and avoid showing the same ad campaign to the same user more than once or twice -- that much we know. But so far as I have seen, they do not stoop to shoveling spyware into their ads. It would not go over well, and they are a large enough corporation that it would be easy to run a PR assassination on them if they pulled this. So firing off a pile of klaxons and alerts every time a banner ad is displayed strikes me as a little dishonest for a 'spyware' prevention product.
(It's better than that, of course; we deal with Google, Tribal Fusion, and directly with smaller corporations to fill out our ad rotation. Tribal Fusion then resells blocks of ads to DoubleClick, who in turn stocks them with banners from the highest bidder. So there are numerous middlemen that we have to deal with, and the easiest, or at least most honest, course of action was to say 'no porn, no popups, and no crapware' right at the beginning.)

I think the bulk of my stuff came from college age interest type sites. Stuff like collegehumor.com and skoopy.com. There is one program that is particularly malicious that is giving me ten kinds of hell right now. I can't kill it and I'll still probably have to format.
The kicker? It solely displays ads that sell "anti-spyware" software. Straight from windows desktop too. Bastards.
It also installed an anti-spyware program to my start menu, but it is impossible to delete, uninstall, or open.
Forgive me for being a bit accusatory in tone if that's how I came across in earlier posts. I'm up to my ass sick computer though, and I always thought RC.com was an ethical website.

How many times have I told you that pretending you're getting these problems from RC.com doesn't throw ANYONE off of the amount of porn you're downloading. It's a sickness. Admit it and get help. : )

There's also the route of not using IE, and use a more security-aware browser, such as mozilla or opera...

Trav: if you can find a CD bootable operating system somehow, that's how I get rid of persistent ones. I use WINPE, boot from a CD, and run adaware. This way, the spyware isn't being run while you're trying to delete it, so it gets rid of more than a regular scan a lot of the time.
The best way is to just not get them though. Like Sauron says, mozilla helps. :) Good luck man!

I have never gotten any spy/adware from rc.com.
spybot s&d can delete some registry items that you would normally want to keep if you dont carefully look at each thing. I would recomend Webroot's Spysweeper. It is 10,000 times better, and looks cooler... :wink:

I use these two alone as well, along with the technique I described above. I also have wound up reformating once because of spyware, but that was a good thing. ;) It's kinda nice to have a fresh start.

Not related to this site, but the general topic:
I got a SPAM the other day that had an 800 phone number listed, so I called and actually got the marketing department of a company blasting fake signature emails. I was so happy to have a chance to voice my feelings about receiving "bull sh!t" at work that I said almost exactly that, including the "bull sh!t". (It's really hard to say "bull sh!t" when it's spelled that way.)
The idiot had the nerve to come back at me with, "Watch your language, Sir!" I could have given him a trophy for Hypocrite of the Year. You can send all kinds of "malarky" to millions of total strangers, but please don't call what they do by what it is.

You know, believe me, I feel your pain, but please don't yell at the help.
I worked a front desk for over a year, and nothing sucks more than being the first line of defense. People would come in mad at a manager, and I would get screamed at.
I could deal with a lot, but the first name I was called, or when the profanity started sailing, I would stand up and say, "Look, I'll come back and help you when you have calmed down, but I refuse to sit here and be screamed at over something I had nothing to do with."
Then I'd walk away. Usually people started apologising immediately, change their tone, and I'd be able to help them.
It's been my experience that people who are yelling and cussing are not looking for me to help them. They are looking to scream and yell at someone. Damned if that someone is me. I would have probably hung up the phone on you if I wasn't in the mood to deal with it.
In short, please be easy on the help. Have they done anything to warrant a screaming?

And now....The rest of the story...
I asked specifically for the Marketing Department and The person responsible for your emailings. Then I confirmed that the person I was talking to had actually composed the spam. I then spoke to him from the heart with only the single bad word. After I got over the shock of an unethical abuser of the Internet and my time, etc. being offended at anything less than the F bomb, I apologized for my language. I truly don't verbalize every thought.
TD, your point is excellent about blasting the help.
After hanging up, I forwarded the email to the Fed Trade Comm's uce@ftc.gov website (sans even "bs").
