Sometimes, it's easy to see why "'Rock Climber' Injured in Fall" is such a common headline. :(

that looks like 4th class choss to me and the guys are more in the category "rock scrambelers" than "rock climbers".

If I stole an F14 from an airforce base, took off, and promply crashed, would the headline read "fighter pilot killed in crash?"

A "man climbing rock" is not the same thing as a "Rock Climber."

I know I'm stating the obvious...

And yet, the mainstream press makes this very mistake almost every time. Obvious to us, not to them.

And they are free soloers. jeesh cant you people see that? :o

Non climbers don't realize till it's too late that going up is easier than down climibing.

Headlines should read... "Turons hurt while attempting to be rockclimbers"

time for a little devils advocate.

what precisely makes one a "rockclimber." In the case of the fighter pilot example, there are certain credentials one must acquire before becoming a fighter pilot...like being an officer...and going to flight school etc..... A rockclimber however, requires no real "proof" of his or her profession....i suppose what denotes us as "rockclimbers" is: a) our gear and ability to use said gear properly and b) the routes we have sent denoting our dedication to the sport and skill level.....but there is really no irrefutable way of proving that someone is a climber. The only reason we assume that these two jackasses aren't climbers is because we assume that a climber would know better than to scramble up some chosspile in their converses....but I've certainly seen many climbers, far better than myself who you would not immediately identify as a "climber stereotype." whatever the hell that may be.

food for thought.
peace :D

Yezad, makes a good point. I think we on e this board define 'climbers' using common sense. Common sense tells us that we are climbers and morons like that are not. But the point is the same. Of course papers don’t know what a climber is and what is not, because we ourselves can not give them any set definition. Used to be we could define it as someone using a rope and on a big wall, but every boulderer here (including myself) would be offended by that now. So if we wanted to change the public’s perception, and you had to simplify it for the non climbers, how would you 'define' a climber??

How do we know these two are not climbers? For all I know it's Dean Potter and Tommy Caldwell out for a stroll.

Funny, I just never see winter alpine photos like this...

As a side note cyclist have the same problem, the dreaded "freds"...

Easily identified from great distances by their square pedaling and over reaction to any catistrophic event such as a passing car or barking dog (up close you will find out why: elbows locked, knees out, heels up, and distracting mirrors and saddle bags mounted on the latest titanium frame). It is proper Fred etiquette to anounce everything they do on the bike ("BRAKING!" "STOP SIGN!!!" ), or in some cases recite the beloved Fred anthem "ON YOUR LEFT!" to happless other Freds as they pass... handing on the tradition to yet another Fred generation.

On the flipside, if you are a racer (or perhaps a fast Fred), and a family member or aquintance finds out, the first question will attmatically be "have you done the Tour de' france?", and then they will surely ask the ultimate runner up question, and inquire if you "raced" in the popular local organized ride. You are simultaneously grouped in the same manner with both cycling's elite ("Hark! No!?! Elite? It's mean to say that some are elite and others are not!" Yes. E-L-I-T-E.) and freds, which inveribly drives home the point that (and my point) to them, you are the all same.

Yours truly,

the elitest Fred basher.

Possible captions for this photo....

"Dammit Tim! We can take a fine photo of your RV from below..."

"Nice send on that 5.2 Bob, lets take a whack at this 5.7!"

"I dont know what happened, but my ring is stuck in this crack thingy!"

"I am telling you, the trail goes this way, I saw some other hikers go up it just a few minutes ago..."

"Is now a bad time to confess to not knowing how to do this climbing thing after all?"

"Ok, on the tough parts, I'll just stand on your shoulders... BUT DON'T LET GO!"

well said everyone. i appreciate varying points of view and there are many here.
there is a human condition that must be battled constantly by every individual. elitism. judgement. ignorance (not stupidity).
elitism as the tendency for someone to say "you don't belong with us, unless..."
judging others actions, experiences, or words as invalid simply because they differ.
and their ignorance of what they think a "blank" is or what they're told "something" should be.
and stupidity...well, that just gets on my nerves...even my own.
