Hey all, I need a spot in the SF/Bay area that would be good for a posed "climbing" picture. I don't know the area that well in terms of good climbing spots but it can even just be a picturesque boulder where one can get off the ground far enough to look like it's somewhere else or give that feel. It would be cool if it were a real boulder problem but it's not necessary. I won't have a belay partner or a crash pad but I lead at the 5.10a/b range -- just did my first 5.10c/d redpoint last week :) -- to give you an idea of what I should be able to get on. I don't do too much bouldering though. Another consideration is it has to be easy to get to because the photographer is not a climber and we both don't have that much time because we will be driving in from far off. Thanks for any help! P.S. This isn't for my website, it's for a group of store owners and they're featuring different folks so it's not really for a climbing audience per se.

Indian Rock. You can pose dangling over the pit. If the climber isn't bold, they might not actually want to dangle there, but it makes a great photo, and it's right in Berkeley. Might want to stack a couple of pads below.

Up at Castle Rock a rock called California Ridge is a great place to pose for a picture, there is a 10a route, I cant think of the name right now, any how it would appear that your are way off of the deck, you will have mountians below and either the ocean or the fog in the back drop. I would suggest finding a belayer and a photographer to get the best picture. Check out the local guide book. Sorry I cant be more sepcific, but its truly a great local.

Hmm a friend of mine mentioned Turtle Rock too, she said it's in Sausalito? I found a Turtle Rock park in San Jose though... not the same thing? Castly Rock sounds great picture wise too. And... I guess I can turn this into sort of a climbing partner find, anyone free to be belay slave that day? Hehe. I'll get you a t-shirt from my shop as payment :) I"m going to be driving down from Sacramento so the closer to the Northern end of the Bay Area, the better for me.

Yeah just got back from looking at climbs in that area. I'll be doing the shoot Friday, July 2nd -- think the beach will be too crowded? Is it pretty close to the city? Also, remember that unless I get a partner from this thread I'll be climbing without a rope, spotter, or crash pad.

I would vote Turtle Rock. I was there over memorial weekend and we were the only people there for the most part. I took a picture of my friend and he looks like he's up high, because i managed to cut out the ground. But he was only about 3 feet off the ground. Castle in Saratoga/San Jose is another option, but it might be crowded unless you know where to go for secluded areas. good luck.

I would go to Indian rock in Berkeley. Iwas there last week and the area is pretty picturesqe. I would recomend the overhand direct, which has a long reach with your right leg flagged about as far as it goes. I have a good picture of myself on that same climb and it turned out well. Would be happy to offer directions or beta.

Hey, Dances. I have to agree with the rec. for Cal ridge/cliff at Castle. Similar bouldering shots are accomplishable at the network of boulders there, and there's a great view of Santa Cruz if the fog is down. Just go early. Bring a flash to beat back the shadows. Have a safe trip. FT

TurtleRock is actually in Tiburon. It's in the route data base on this site under RingMountain Open Space. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listArea.php?AreaID=6051 Here's what it looks like... http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=16705 With a big telephoto(300+) you can get some nice shots where the city looms large in the background. I think it was Jim Thornburg that had a shot of TurtleRock on the cover of Rock&Ice a couple of years ago. SplitRock would also offer some scenic posed shots. Do spend some time bouldering though. The full traverse of TurtleRock is really a great boulder problem with interesting rock. It's not super hard but it's long. As others have said. Micky's Beach, Stinson and Goat Rock would offer good sea side shots. Early evening light is your best option right now for all of these spots. Also, keep in mind that very dense fog is always a possibility this time of year on the coast.

Thanks for the additional replies! The photographer would like to do Stinson Beach. I love that shot of Turtle Rock but I think she wants to get in fairly close, at least so that you can see the shirt I'll be wearing (remember this is for a site about clothing and the other pictures of store owners are pretty close in on the folks). I also think she likes the beach because she knows how to get there. I'll look in the database for routes there, but if anyone can think of a particular boulder, please chime in :) Looking through all the suggestions I gotta say that it makes me want to go visit them all myself sometime. Maybe next trip up North I'll work it in. Luckily on July 1st I'll be climbing out in Lover's Leap so I should get my climbing fix in before doing the pose stuff.

Turtle Rock! The picture posted is actually facing east you can get a great shot of the city and the bay facing south. Have fun at the beach.

The name of the 10a at CRSP (castle rock) is either mullah or ahyatola (Yeah I kknow I can't spell...Dont really care I can do math instead)...Anyhow a picture there will appear very exposed. Will the photographer be willing to be lowered or be on rap to take the shots? There are some short easy (5.7-5.9) exposed spires in the pinnacles you might look at. There is even on (5.7 i think) called photographers delight. Good luck and please post the finished product somewhere that we can all see it !

Naw, the photographer isn't a climber at all, the other store owner shots were of them just standing or sitting somewhere, in their home kitchen, outside a bar, in their backyard, etc... my picture will be the most outdoorsy by far so I don't think the photog will be up for dangling on a rope, hehe. I also don't know what kind of equipment she'll have. I really think it's just going to come out like so many "posed" shots you see but I'll post it here anyway.
