Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to, and if so how one converts the north american systems of grading (V3, 5.10 etc) into the European system (5.8 etc). Thanks very much.

yes, there is a grade chart somewhere on this site and there are numerous others on the net. also, when you put the route into the DB, you get all grades listed in the pulldown menu, S is for sport, B for bouldering.

try rockfax. The conversion on this site is wrong -- there are no "minuses" in the french scale (at least that I have seen in the 20 or so areas that I have been to here).

In reply to: try rockfax. The conversion on this site is wrong -- there are no "minuses" in the french scale (at least that I have seen in the 20 or so areas that I have been to here). that again depends on the country. here we use the french scale with pluses (7a+) and half grades (7a/b), the a/b being slightly harder than 7a+. the most common european ratings are the french scale (7a, 5c etc) and the alpine (roman numbers).

Most climbing guides have a conversion chart toward the front.

In reply to: Note: There isn't a single European rating. As you can see from the chart, a lot of countries have their own rating scales. The Belgian scale is the hardest 8^) G

There is a chart in the back of MFOTH as well. Pg. 512 in the sixth edition. Yes I did have to look that up.

It was kinda funny this topic started today. skibabeage, cliffhanger9, and [user="russman"]myself just put the finishing touches on this article Grades across the Waters Let us know what you think....if you have access too, or know where we can find more systems (without getting too out-of-control) then I can add them to the list.
