In the last week or so, several people have posted looking for partners/info about climbing at Josh, in July!

Unless you are unfortunate enough to live in the Joshua Tree area, why would you brave 90 to 110 degree heat.

Josh is a fun place to climb, but summer is a time for all those other climbing areas that are too cold in the winter. When days get shorter and weather cools, you can think about spending time in the desert.

Summertime night climbing in JTree rules... Upper 70s-80's, and not a sole in the park. Have done many a Trad route with a small Zipka headlamp. Very spiritual looking at the Milky Way Galaxy with a few shooting stars when belaying the 2nd up Illusion Dweller at 2AM.

Gotta agree about trying to climb there during the day... Not a good choice.

Headlamps are considered bad style. Think moonlight.

Belaying?

Yep... "Belaying the 2nd up Illusion Dweller"... A little too stout for a highball or freesolo for my tastes.

Feel free to post pics of you freesoloing it though... Day or night.

I guess I will offer a dissenting opinion. I lived full time in the town of Joshua Tree for 5 years in the 1980s. I also owned a second home there for another couple of years more recently. I have climbed year round at JT for years and can honestly say that I have had more really miserable climbing days there in the winter than I have had in the summer.

Call me crazy or uptight or both... (and I've heard worse, believe me)

But in light of the current things going on with that 17 yo kid lost in the heat in Josh, this thread title kinda bothers me.

Now I'm not known for being pc, but...

Anyhow, nothing is better than Josh by full moon, totally magical. And having climbed at night there, I must say it is awesome.

Good point... I'll change it out of respect of the kid lost out there currently. I think the author was making pun at the "JTree---I'll Drive" thread.

Please send any hate mail to me via PM if you dislike me changing the title.

Well, don't feel like an evil un-pc a$$ Adam, cause it's looking more and more like the kid didn't just wander off and get "lost". Homicide detectives spent all day at his friend/"partner"'s house today carting away possible evidence. Homicide investigators took over the case from SAR on Monday. Here's some wire from today's developments:

Investigators on Thursday searched the home of a 17-year-old boy who was with a teenager who was reported missing last week in Joshua Tree National Park.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said deputies and local police executed the search warrant at 10:30 a.m. at the Carlsbad home of Ben Fogelstrom, who was hiking with Eric Sears, 17, before his friend vanished.
The search concluded six hours later after investigators collected numerous items, said sheriff's Sgt. Earl Quinata. The items were not disclosed.
The search of the home and a family minivan was prompted by information obtained in more than 30 interviews that have been conducted since Sears disappeared July 15 in the rugged park, Quinata said.
The teen and his family were cooperating, according to authorities.
Fogelstrom "is not a suspect but he is a focus - one of many focuses in this investigation," Quinata said. "We have no suspects in custody. No one has been arrested."
Sears' disappearance was being investigated as a missing person case, but homicide investigators joined the search Tuesday and authorities have said that information from park visitors indicated foul play might be involved.
Fogelstrom has told authorities he was hiking with Sears when the two, recent high school graduates who worked together at a restaurant, became separated in the Jumbo Rocks Campground area. Authorities have extensively searched the rugged region, where daytime temperatures can soar above 100 degrees.
Quinata said the Joshua Tree search was scaled back, but that park employees were monitoring the area.

Now if you wanted to title the thread "Joshua Tree - if you possibly murder your friend", then you would be in danger of being an un-pc a$$ again :?

The "Too Hot" title made me think it was a new porno thread or something. Someone might be mislead or offended.

PS: Mr. Beige Slacks is one of those stuck in Josh and is making the best of the situation.

Why in the hell would anyone go to Williamson?!?!?

I live and work construction in Palm Springs. It is hot here. If you live in this area, go to Tahquitz. If you live in LA, the Needles are the same distance as Tahquitz is. So you have two great choices, neither of which are sports climbing areas.

TRADitionally yours,

I'm sure not going to try to talk anyone into coming out here this time of year. Without a cool place for a midday siesta, it would be tough. However, I do take strong offense at being described as "unfortunate enough to live in JT." I happen to like living in a rather clean, inexpensive, scenic area that just happens to have over 7000 routes to climb. (At least half are worth doing).

We're not "stuck in JT," we live here because we like it.

Thanks Holdplease2 for your tactful comments.

I also live in Josh, and for many years at that...and enjoying it! While you are all very right about the heat I as well would travel to cooler climes. But when that wasn't possible I would just go for the pre-dawn start and be back at the house by 10:30 (as I just did this morning) or the full moon ascents are very cool indeed!! Cheers!
