T-nuts vs. hex nuts?

I'm building Phase I of my home wall. I went to Home Depot and bought my plywood, chain, anchors and then went to look at bolts and t-nuts. Well HD didn't have them so I went to Lowe's and they wanted 87 cents for one of them things....I was like bullsh*t. So I found some cheap ones online that I'm going to buy. But my real question is what is the advantage of using T-nuts over a hex-nut with a washer? I think I might try that on my holds while I'm awaiting the arrival of my T-nuts.

How are you going to keep that hex nut from spinning? Unless I'm not understanding something, you'd have to have access to the back of your wall to hold the nut with a wrench everytime you wanted to change a hold.

T-nuts on the other hand should have spikes that pound into the wood or holes to screw them into the wood so they can't spin. They're more permanent and infinitely easier.

If you think it's worth the hassle, I can't see a reason not to try out your wall with washers and hex nuts until you get the t-nuts though.

Good luck and congrats on the new wall!

That's what I had figured after I posted it (the holds spinning), but wasn't sure. In response I will have access to the back of my wall, it's a quasi-freestanding wall. I'm making it adjustable so I can vary the degree of incline. So all that will be attatched to the wall is a anchor with chain running to the wall itself. Also for anyone else who has landlord issues, you may want to consider this as an option as the damage to the wall will be minimal.

I don't know exactly how you would use a hex nut in that application, but is seems like it would be a pain. I think I got my T nuts from www.cheapholds.com. I bought 1000 for under $100 (I think). Anyhow, you should go to some place like that and just get the T nuts cheaper.

I got my t-nuts from Atomic(www.atomicholds.com), $7 for 100, and shipping is a flat $5 on all online orders. I ended up with 1000 t-nuts for $75.

I can't even imagine the hassle it would be to use hex nuts on my climbing wall, would take two people to change a hold. For short term, it doesn't sound too bad though.

Good luck on your wall, and post up some pics when you're done.

There is nothing wrong with hex nuts if you can access the backside and dont change holds around frequently. T nuts just make it more convenient.

be sure to know what kind of Tnuts you're getting. They do range in quality and have either 3 or 4 prongs. The 4 prong hold better in the plywood.

Pc, you got a friend thats gonna help you tighten down those hex nuts when you can't reach the backside?
