Since I don't get many comments on my photo, ask it overhere again: What's good on this shot, and what's bad? Personally I like the soft colors, the pose, and the expression on his face. But I feel now that I should have zoomed out a little more (more view to the left & below). What do you think? http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=36458

In reply to: But I feel now that I should have zoomed out a little more (more view to the left & below). What do you think? No. I like it the way it is. Even though it is sort of close on the climber, it evokes a feeling of space because of the hazy air in the background. More background might distract from the wonderful simplicity that says so much in the photo. Nice job. UB

What's good is the overall composition and DOF. The weather looks like crap, but well, some days are just ugly ;) What's lacking is drama. I could be wrong, but the angle of the rope beneath him suggests that he's only just clipped the first bolt. So his calm pose is good, yet doesn't give a sense of urgency or movement.

The talent looks like he is dressed to enter a speed ice skating contest. Pic is a little dark and could well do with more colour. The border is way too wide. I love the look of those holds and this pic makes me wanna go out and climb that route. Yeah, he does seem a little too relaxed doesn`t he. At least we can see his face. I guess this pic has captured a self contemplating mood as the climber chalks up and decides on his next course of action. All that said, I do like this pic. Nice job.

Too relaxed? Might be. This dude climbs 5.14a, this is only 5.11c  The reason why he climbed it was to place the biners for a friend's flash attempt. In fact he was aiming for Cous-Cous, a nearby 5.14b route. But due to the poor weather (it was cold and rainy in Spain this spring), that route was entirely wet..

It's a nice shot. I think what's lacking is contrast. The image is grey and flat. Has no POP. that is all.....

I'm with Merock. A little Digital Enhancement could go a long way with this one. Bump up the contrast, adjust the colour curves .. make it more dramatic. -ryan

I made a few corrections: left out the black border, increased contrast & brightness, brought up greenish/blueish colors, cut back yellow colors. Better? http://users.pandora.be/..._EL_C_corrected2.jpg

here is my attpemt at improvement. I think I went a little too far with the colour enhancement in the background. You might consider painting a different background in alltogether .. if you have a better exposed photo from the same day that you could make work would be good. http://www.biffard.com/critique/popol.jpg

:? acc to me the colors seem indeed a bit too heavy. But that's just me. Any other opinions? About background: well, it was a rainy day, so no nice blue-heaven-with-clouds available :-(

i waited a while to decide what i am feeling for this image.... i think that in biffs version the feeling of a rainy day is lost. If you want to do that, it is a great resurrection, yet i kind of liked the soft/gray feeling of the very first image. Your edit, popol, lacks blacks imho. I would go somewhere between, have some whites and blacks, yet leave the overall grayness there. The talent is relaxed, and he is centered, making the image consistently static. Yet the grayness somewhat conflicts with the calmness of his pose, what is the overall mood for this image? If it is the depression, the grayness and static pose works for me, yet he is relaxed somewhat conflicting the mood. If the mood you are after is relaxing, his placement and pose works, yet the grayness does not work there. Biffs version is closer to this mood, yet too colorful to be relaxing.

ok, both of your digi modifications look worse than the original (which was pretty damn good). altering curves/b&c/levels any more than a tiny bit seems to create these weird shades of color that just don't occur in nature. on overcast days such as the one pictured, your best bet is a very light smattering of fill flash.

Yeah, coïncidence, I guess. And did you notice the discrete presence of his sponsor? 8^) Also coïncidence, in fact.
