And people wonder why climbers jump through dumpsters, wear crap clothes outdoors and their best climbing clothes to the pub.... ..... if only cams came with a weeks worth of food, or a 2 night stay at the Hilton.... now that would be at least worth it..... .....but seriously... how much do other sports cost? How much do people spend on their CARS for f&*% sake. At least most of what we buy is to stop us from dying... the rest is.... as someone else put- 'trimmings' which there is very little of... ....Dave

In reply to: At least most of what we buy is to stop us from dying... the rest is.... as someone else put- 'trimmings' which there is very little of... ....Dave Bull. New trad climbers who are spending $2000 on a rack are buying a hell of a lot more than they need to keep from dying. 10 nuts - $50 8 cams - $400 10 slings - $50 4 quickdraws - $50 30 biners - $180 ------------------- Total: $730 To get up to 2 grand requires a lot of 'trimmings'. Yeah, 'spose you're right.... some people do buy many 'trimmings'... I'm also thinking in Aus$ so $2000 is actually around $1300..... Still alot of money for a rack. JUst by memory I'd say my rack adds to about $1200 US, but cost me (due to finding sales) probably $800 US. cracklover. You list is a little minimal, but would do the job. I'd add a few hexes and probably 4 more draws/10 less biners. That's for a 'short' multipitch. Also add 4 locking biners. ....Dave

I've got to be around $1250 by now. But my rack still needs some work. It will probably be around $1600 when all is said and bought.

pulled out all my gear to get ready for Smith last week and my wife 'bout had a cow. Last time she saw it I had about a quarter what I have now. Then she asked how much I spent on all of it. When I figured it out, I was close to a grand. Wow, it sure adds up. But I also buy it as I need it. So it just doesn't seem as though I was spending as much that way. I was as surprised as she was when I added it up!

In reply to: can you put a price on something that will potentially save life? Of course you can. Most people have no trouble accepting some risk of death for some other benefit. Ever drive fast because you're running late? Rob

In reply to: I do have to agree that most of my money goes for gas!! I just got my Drivers license aabout a week ago. I was smart enough to buy myself a good sized trad rack BEFORE I started paying for gas and insurance and other car expenses. :D :D . Now I can climb all I want. Matt

As you mentioned, I probably shouldn't do this. I have to say it goes well over 1K. I am not sure I really want to add it all up, but even at what I would call the satisfactory rack I have now, I am sure I am over that mark. On the way, are 20 new wiregates and a Z3 and Z4 cams. Microcams are really a new area for me, and these are just the first two to see what I like. Then it occured to me that I don't have any Ballnutz, and I could probably double up on some tricams. Hmmm. More gear.

In reply to: Y'all are missing that the most major hidden expense in all of climbing is GAS!! My rather substantial trad rack pales in comparison to yearly fuel costs. 30,000 miles last year 14 miles per gallon $1.60 per gallon ------------------------- $3428 on gas. I live on campus, so guess where that gas was burned. Cha-Ching I'm buying a prius. Comparable fuel cost would have been... $960. Or a TDI VW....$1021. Substantial. Buy the diesel jetta!!
