Is there such a thing as drinking too much water? I drink water at work constantly and at times my urine is almost clear. Does anyone know if this can be bad?

Occasionally people die from drinking too much water. More info here, here, and here.

I always thought that it was good to drink tons of water, and keep that pee clear! but if you drink too much and dont eat any sodium....then it gets dangerous... so just dont drink tons of h2o randomly without eating anything sodium-alicous! (and by tons... i mean quite a bit!)...i think it's something like that...but im no nutritionist...

clear, copius, and scentless, is how it should be, it means your staying hydrated. Just dont take any antiuretics and you will be fine

Tis true. A guy in one of the basic training classes behind mine died from over drinking.

If you are just drinking too much water during the day, and all is normal with your body, you will just pee alot (this will not kill you). If you were to run for 4 or 5 hours in 100 degree weather, drinking too much water could be fatal.

Thanks for the tips all. As it is close to happy hour here on the west coast I'm going to lay off the water and switch to an adult beverage.

I've only heard of it being fatal when you drink in very large amounts. This is caused by the water thinning the blood.

Dude don't get scared drink as much as you want it's good for you, you won't die, simple rule when you feel full of water just stop drinking. You've got to be an idiot to kill yourself from overdrinking, turkeys do that in the rain sometimes but we're smarter than that (or so I thought before hearing some of these stories). It would take astronomical amounts of water at one time like 5 gallons in an hour to kill yourself.

I just recently got into a discussion about this with my doctor. There is a condition called "water poisoning" you can get from drinking too much. Here in Phoenix we have several hospitalizations for it per year.

Beyond the more severe cases, drinking a non-lethal amount, but still too much, water on a regular basis can deprive your body of vital minerals, especially if the water is overly filtered.

The ideal amount of water to drink during a day when you are not sweating or outdoors is 1 oz / 2 lbs of bodyweight / day. So if you weigh 150lbs, that is 75 oz of water per day (which is about 2.5 quarts or liters).

Yea...basically u would have to continuously chug water for probably 20-30 minutes before it would cause any real damage. So its really not someting that i am EVER going to worry about.

I remember people would get faint when we had to stand on line in Parris Island and chug a canteen - if anyone had any water left, we had to chug another - until all canteens were empty. I personally have seen people vomit as a result.

I was aware of water intoxication - but never have I seen so much info on it. I gotta say this is one of the best threads I have seen in a while

Referring back to the original post - if you keep your water intake at a reasonable level and you keep your urine clear and odorless, you'll be fine. That's actually optimal. One thing I did learn though... when you go for sports drinks - you want to go with something that has about 6% carbohydrates - that is supposed ot be the target for optimal metabolizing. And of course the electrolytes are necessary, too.

I don't have any facts, but you could probably check Gatorade or Powerade's web sites for more info on that.

Wow... And I thought I got into some dumb debates, When do we start posting sodium percentages and relate that to climbing muscular activity vs. h2O persperation and sodium waste products. Then contrast Gatorade sodium content, with lunar activity.

YOU CAN NEVER DRINK ENOUGH WATER!!!!

(You can, But, you will have to worry about being hit by lightning, a meteor, and a nuclear winter, All at the same time) [mabye some herpes too]

You cant really drink to much water un less you arent taking in enough sodium and electrolytes . this can lead to a condition called hyponutrinia
the only case ive heard of someone dying by too much water is when they purposefuly take in so much that they are urinating at the same time .they do this to disturb the electrolytes and create a off balane . it is supposed to create the ultimate high unfortunatl any one who had trie this died
