I go through the routes dbase quite often just to see what kind of information is out there and to get ideas for sprucing up the areas I have entered. Most of the areas look okay but on some the grammar and punctuation is absolutely terrible! Some don't capitalize the first letter of the sentence and names of campgrounds, etc. are not capitalized. The list is long but I think you get the idea. Please try to do a professional job when entering info into the dbase. People logging on to the site to find info might log right back off if they think 1st graders are entering info. On the other hand, mistakes are made and I have edited some areas just to fix spelling, etc. If anyone sees screw-ups of mine, PM me or fix them.

I would say that this should apply to "Subjects" that show up on the home page too. Just makes the whole site look more professional. The actual forum posts aren't as important but the title should look good.

Sorry this was so long-let me know if you think I am nitpicking!

I must agree with that, if we want to remain a quality site, then maybe a selected (TRUSTED) few should be allowed to go in and edit some of the posts so that we don't look like a bunch of elementary schoolers!!! Missspelling in the threads is fine, but the title of the thread should at least have some grammatical and spelling integrity!!!

I VOLUNTEER!!!

d00d, this is a volunteer effort... people are getting what they are paying for. You kind of have to take that into consideration when looking at the atrocious use of the English language. Maybe it would be possible to shove the entries through ispell or some such checker on the way into the database.

If someone opens up a bug report requesting an inline spellchecker, chances are decent that it will at least get beta-tested. That would probably fix the most egregious erers.

... um, not to be picky or anything, but shouldn't the subject of this thread be "Spelling and Grammar Need to Improve" (without the 's') since 'spelling and grammar' form a compound subject?

This would be the third time we've had this debate since I joined the site back in August or September (I don't remember).. I used to be very gung-ho in getting the imbeciles to sharpen up their spelling skills - just to be bitched out 99% of the time.. So I've given up on expecting that the kids nowadays be able to spell properly...

Sometimes, if something (especially from an area I'm familiar with) looks particularly horrid, I'll go in and edit for spelling, mechanics and grammar myself. Since some people don't seem to care, I figure I'll take the initiative and do it. Maybe, someday, they'll get the hint.

Hey - I have an idea... Why don't we include a spell check??? Is that so hard to do?
I would not imagine so. There has got to be tons of software out there that could do this for us.

From #rockclimbing.com chat:

hey Sauron, how hard would it be to add a spellchecker to the routesDB?
<`Sauron> Um.
<`Sauron> fiend: No, don't go there.
kind of a pain in the ass?
I was thinking that it'd be waaaaay more trouble than it's worth
<`Sauron> 'zaktly
why make a programmer spend hours trying to code a spellchecker when it takes the user 45 seconds to look over their info
feh
<`Sauron> one word:
<`Sauron> LAZINESS

I think you are forgetting some important point.
Many of the site's registered users DO NOT HAVE ENGLISH AS THEIR NATIVE LANGUAJE !!!!

In my case, altough i make an effort trying to write correctly, GRAMAR AND ORTOGRAPHIC ERRORS will usually be present in my posts, because my english is limited....

Keep in mind there are others languajes spoken in the world besides english!!!

Well, I think having english as a second language is definately an excuse for spelling mistakes, but I think we're mainly talking about people who live in N.America and write/speak english every day of their lives.

Then again, Daisuke is Chilean and has better english skills then quite a few of the users here

Juan,

While I can understand your frustration, I think that they are mainly discussing simple, stupid mistakes, such as the one that's sustaining this thread. Seriously, we all make simple mistakes, and your English is probably mucho mejor que mi espanol. But, it's also easy enough to check your post and correct it when you've made gross errors.

Also, although it may not be as obvious to people whose native language is not English, some people are just really lazy with grammar and spelling, and, unfortunately, it reflects poorly on their general intellect (which is what I believe these guys were trying to emphasize when this thread was started).

Seriously, if you really are some bad-arsed climber, you should be smart enough to be cognizant (and respectful) of the medium you are using to communicate. And, if you're really that p*ss-poor of a speller, as some of us are, copy/paste into Word, check the spelling/grammar, then post to the forum .. it takes an extra 30 secs on my ridiculously slow computer.

And a parting thought, although I'm not a very good programmer, I can tell you that these guys have built a really robust little playroom for our little online community here .. let's be respectful of them.

Just my .02 ..

Nothing bad was meant by my reply, I was just offering to help out...Like it was said before, and shown in the EVEREST WOMEN's Thread, we are just trying to help, not point out someone's typos...

I think you misunderstood something... I know that my spanish would be way off, that's why I said it is understandable to make mistakes if english is not your native tongue.

Of course, we can not be picking out typos in posts if we can not get the spelling right on a major portion of this website, so we need to cross our T's and dot our I's before we go out and correct others...

To see what I mean refer to this thread. We need to fix the stuff on our own site before we can tell others to. ALLBUMS!!!

mauta...You folks from foreign countries know the English language better than American kids do. The worst spelling and grammar I've seen has come from posters in the United States!

Jody,

Sorry, I couldn't help myself, but I did "get" what you were trying to say. Although, I must confess that I am guilty of dropping caps and apostrophes when posting online ... just a habit, I guess.

I'll try to be more aware of the general appearance of my postings in the more serious forums hereinafter.

clymbr...You sound like you would know. I think I remember in school on these compound things...I was told to say them separately. 'Spelling needs...grammar needs...' or 'spelling need...grammar need'. Whichever sounds proper is the one to use in the compound...correct. Or is my memory failing me?

Hey Folks,
Our single reason for being here is to communicate across the planet what we love to do. I DO SAY ACROSS THE PLANET. Not everyone is a Oxford graduate. If it weren't for this site and Trevor and everyone else we wouldn't have what we have now. Relax and enjoy.

I think its a good point on the entrance page of the site, but beyond that...it shouldn't matter all that much. If everything were to have perfect spelling (especialy forums) it would take away the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of this page. I like it as it is. Perfect spelling would give the site a stuck-up feel.
