I had a buddy try to get me into it. You dont really repair the "tower" itself. You repair computer parts that go bad inside a small booth built next to the cell tower. The tower itself doesnt need fixing.

First you will start out just being the gopher boy. Learning how to do this learning how to use that piece of equipment. Lots of traveling. Pay is ok but gets better after the first year or two if you can stick it out. There are some companies who build the towers and maintain the hardware but normally it is two separate companies. Best bet and safest job is on the maintenance side. So if you like to travel and spend most of your time in hotels then go for it. As for the climbing aspect not much crosses over into rock climbing. Basically climbing a ladder although it can be a really long ladder. Look on websites like monster.com for job listings. Good luck.

my two primary climbing partners build cell towers for a living. the pay is good but the hours are long and its alot of hard labor. in vegas, cell towers are being built constantly...and the old ones are always getting replaced, so theres a lot of work to be had. the company out here that builds 'em is an electric company that contracts out with Verizon and Cingular.

best job i ever had (except for that winter in iowa). long days with lots o' vertical feet involved. we did quality assurance and sweep tests on cell antenna installations. it could be back breaking labor, but i always got a good workout and the views were pretty good. not sure who to contact for work in that field anymore.

I have worked on radio towers many times. It's not all fun I can tell you. I have nearly frozen to death and nearly been blown off them too. And after a day of standing on the cross members of a tower ones feet hurt like hell. The work is also sometimes very dirty as the towers rust. It's also sometimes a bit scary. It can be very unnerving watching the clouds blow by. It gives a person the fealing of falling. But, I've also had some fun too. :D

I just chant to myself that they have survived tornados, and my fat ass won't make them collapse in a 5 knot wind.
