You could always go for something cheap and disposable. Like a Lada. Easy to fix. Ok on gas, just don't take it over 55.

I have an F-150 with camper shell. I have gone as far as building a platform at bed-rail height. Underneath the platform is a 4'X6' shelf on casters. Plenty of room for 2 to sleep on the platform and storage space for mucho gear below.

I'm I poor college student, and I just picked up a small pick up. I love it. I have a hard cover on the back, I built a bike rack for it. I can lock all my gear in it. with my bike on top, room for my kayak, and its extended cab so I can throw a few buddies in it. it doesn't get the mpg my lebarron did, but it has some balls and holds eveything.

Mallrunner, eh? Can't say as that I've ever heard that term before... I see your point, though. Not quite what I'm describing. I mean a nice '90 or newer 4Runner, with full brushguard, slightly bigger tires, pneumatically adjustable suspension. Plenty of room for gear, plenty of room for partners. Enough power to get you by, decent mileage, and not too terrible on the pocketbook(I saw a '91 here in Boise yesterday for $5800 OBO). It does the job well.

I VW van would be cool except it would probably break down and would be expensive to fix any SUV would be good . Also Any van would be good if you dont mind being called a soccer mom.

I like this thread, but some of your recommendations - sheesh!

If you're looking to do car camping, nothing beats a pickup with a camper shell.

I've got a Subaru Impreza wagon that I got because I wanted decent gas mileage, long lasting, fun to drive, four doors, 4 or all-wheel drive. The only thing I can't do with this car is fit my six-foot friends in it for sleeping.

Jeeps are cute and all, but for hauling gear and friends? Plus those things suck gas. And I don't know where you all get the impression they are cheap!

Decent mileage in a Mallrunner? My girlfriend drives a '99(and three years old it still costed more than my new Subaru), and it gets about 14 miles to the gallon(I get 25-30 in my Impreza wagon). Colorado is infested with the things, and while I see them all the time in mall parking lots and on the highway, at the end of the 4WD road I rarely see anything besides Jeeps, big rompy pickups, a few Subarus, and rental cars. The Mallrunners and all the other expensive 4WD minivans tend to be parked back at the paved road where the paint won't get all scratched up.

Cheers if you actually use it for what its designed for - I just really hate seeing one person burn through a gallon of gas heading down the block to get a carton of milk.

atg200- I think something might be wrong with your gf's 4runner if it only gets 14 mpg. I had a 98 4runner until the lease ended last august. I consistently got 20 mpg even in the city. Maybe it is her driving style? But I agree dump the SUV. As soon as I sell my house I am dumping mine (Olsmobile Bravada, Do not get one of these Unless you get a really good deal like I did) for a used pickup with shell.

Definitely a small pick-up with a shell. Don't waste time with that hippy stuff like VW vans-those things are only good to house mangy German Shepards in!

Buy a MINI Cooper! http://www.inno-mini-world.com/images/Innocenti%20Mini%20Cooper%201300.jpg

They come in six-packs so when you are finished with one, you can pick it up, crush it against your forehead, toss it away in the recycling bin and still have 5 more to drive!

I like jdcox's wheels. I have basically driven junk my whole life. Driving stuff like that means that the friends you get will be because they like YOU! Not your car.

this post makes me laugh my arse off! It is a bit much. "You know you have it bad when you pick your car out with climbing in mind?" Where do you climb? Do you do anything else at all? How about the nicest car that you can afford that is capable of bringing you and whatever you climb with (food, friends, gear, circus elephants?) to the crag? sounds like a good solution to me...just shop around man.

Hey there eminem_imposter....BRING IT, Nah i am just joking!! But do think before you speek. What do you really know about Saabs. I think you forgot a few things, like the amount of stuff you can put in this "Car". Mine is now called the SaabUV. I think you also forgot the fact that you can comfortably sleep in them, that they cruise great at 110 mph (i would know cause mine has been there) they do amazing in the snow. They also are extreemly easy to work on, weird but with any commonsense they arn't bad at all. Well i could keep ranting an raving but instead if you want more just let me know. You should think before you speek, i have had 4runners, civics, supras, and have been around many cars(including many VWs) but, But Saabs are one of the greats.

Jeep Wrangler
Try to get an old CJ if you can. Anything after 1997 is a remodelled interior to make it feel more like a regular car. I traded mine in recently because I decided that I was getting too old to be driving a Wrangler. But, I took it off-roading, mud-bogging and laughed in the faces of others when it snowed.

A few winters ago when the snow was 4-5 feet, a buddy and I took my Jeep out into the empty streets and ran our own personal off-road coarse. Of course it was no more than 15 Mph, but we could tread through anything.

For climbing, it's perfect to throw all your gear in the back seat. The trunk space is small, but if you lift the back seat, you can store loads of gear. You can even take out the back seat. Plus, Jeeps are modularized. You can take down the top easily and remove the doors. If you don't like the seats, rip them out and install new ones. It's easy. If it gets muddy inside, don't worry. Everything is insulated. Take down the top, remove the carpet and hose down the entire interior. Try that with your Toyota Anything.

How about a foot powered Flintstone Mobile??

No worries on gas since you use your feet!!

Plus if you crack a tire just chisel a new one from some rock on the side of the road..

Sorry couldn't help myself!!
