Hello fellow climbers! Has anyone retro-fitted the chin strap on a Black Diamond Half Dome helmet? From the factory the chin strap is next to useless. Diffacult to adjust and it slips once adjusted! TIA! s-man

When I use my head as a #100 stopper in an offwidth, the helmet slides off to the side due to the chin strap getting totally loose!

Hey pmyche, As a matter of fact I did go out and buy an elios! The 1/2 dome will serve as a spare for helmetless partners.... As far as safety ratings are concerned, the solution may be as simple as some sort of strap clamp that prevents the strap from moving. I was curious if anyone on rccom had experience doing this. S

It is difficult to adjust. I might take the chin strap off my wig and see if it works.

I have an old school Half Dome (before the redesign that made everything lighter). There's a little rubber ring around the webbing (apparently to keep the excess from flapping around). When I cinch that down by the buckle, there's virtually no slippage. YMMV

I have no problem with the fit of my half dome but The darn thing just cracked from a bad pack job. the elios is even flimsyier than the halfdome so I imaging i could realy break one of those. I tend to be pretty rough on gear. Iwish the companys would use me for product testing. I could use the gear and i am pretty good a breaking stuff

In reply to: The darn thing just cracked from a bad pack job. the elios is even flimsyier than the halfdome I saw one cracked helmet on the Nisqually Glacier last week, one on Guy peak this spring and another one in Lillooet last winter I have my Petzl Ecrin roc for 8 years now and still going strong

I bought a HalfDome 6 months ago so I assume it is the new style. I had the same prob with the strap coming loose (Don't know how BD missed that one) so I put a tiny safety pin thru it.....problem solved.

Never had a problem with my chinstrap....but after hearing about the cracking helmets I thought I would add an FYI on this forum. Most helmets have 2 ratings. If you'll notice - there is one missing on the BD Half-dome as pointed out to me by a fellow climber - I think I may invest into a helmet next time - one with both ratings. I want my helmet to be the best one out there....I love my head in 1-piece. Hard headed climbers need the hardest helmet to match....Cheers --

My chin strap slips all the time, but its nothing that a little duck tape can't fix. Duck tape can fix anything
