I experienced the most severe weather I have ever experianced in my life
this Sat. at Tahquitz. At 11:30 am a severe thunderstorm occured and
lasted about 1 hour. In that hour I estimate that at least 4 inches of
rain fell with 3/4" Hail. Many parties were on the rock at the time and
must have rode the storm out. I hope they were okay. It must have been
one of the most trying times of their lives. We bailed from Fingertrip
traverse with extreme lighting and thunder.
Severe erosion occured on the trail down from lunch rock. The flooding
was extreme.

Yeah, I live in Murrieta and can see Taquitz. I actually took that day off of work because Thunderstorms in So Cal are so rare (not in Colorado where I moved from)...
It was bitchin', but I sure feel for anyone who was up there.
My Boss' first Trad Lead (White Maiden) a few years ago saw us finish the route in a total downpour with thunder, lightning & hail. I saw it coming about 3 pitches up and told him to get moving, which of course slowed him down...And the last pitches of WM are NOT where you want to be in a T-Storm. Of couse, So Cal forecasters didn't say a word about possible storms either day.

Dang, that sounds pretty hairy... I'd hate to do the un-approach (surely there's a better term for this) in major rain :cry:

Got lucky again, (sorta). We are up there almost every Saturday, but Black Bart called me about 5:30am and canceled due to an eye problem. (The bad part is I now have to do next weeks sierra trip solo). Went out to run some errands about 10:30 and when I saw the pops over San Antonio, I was glad I wasn't at Tahquitz :shock:
Been there/done that a few years back when we got caught a couple of pitches up The Gulp. From the NW Recess you can't see it coming! Ozone, crackling lightning, raining gravel slury, and to hot to almost hypothermic in about five min.
A rare occurence,but no fun at all when it happens! A light WP shell rides in an old chalk bag now every time it looks unsettled.

yeah class three approach. basic route finding skills requiered. at least thats how it was described in 50's

Yeah, Saturday's weather was pretty bad for only a 20% chance precipitation.
We were on the first pitch of Dave's Deviation. I feel for all of you that were higher up the mountain. I don't remember ever swearing as much before when I started to get hit on the hands and head by the odd of 1/2" hail.
I hope everyone got down safely.

yesterday 8-14-04 we were up in jtree, Went out to set up a tr for my family to climb around on, I was the last to go up so I could tear every thing down and half way up a super loud thunder stuck... I was quicly lowered because getting a couple bieners, a cordalette, and some webbing down wasnt worth getting struck by lightning... We waited a couple minutes to see is any more was comeing, and my dad ran up the 5.4 to tear everything down, and then rapped down...
One of the bad things about josh, It lightning and thunders before it rain (if it even rains)

Yeah, we were up there too! Pretty crazy for the partly cloudy and 10% chance of precipitation forecast I heard. I did talk to one individual who was planning to do White Maiden, but also explained to me that even though the sky (at 8am) looked clear, the light wisps of moisture forming along the ridge indicated that if the temperatures begin to rise then rain, thunder, and lightning will be following shortly. Well, he called it, and I hope they were okay up there.
We were on the first pitch of Northeast Face East (Falcon Guide route #17) watching it come in when the first droplets of water hit. Within 15 minutes we were IN a waterfall. Lightning was our primary concern while we were exposed on the rock (I saw at least two bolts of lightning between us and the Marion Mountain/Suicide Rocks area) but rock fall was quickly becoming a huge concern when I saw a 50+lb. rock come tumbling down and deck right next to us.
We picked this route since we had a new person with us, and I knew it would be easy to bail from should anything (ie. in this case, the weather) go wrong. That said, we didn't have to leave anything behind for the bootyskanks, but it was still one of the most intense things I've ever experienced.
All in all, we had a little blood (from the hail), and part of the stickers were stripped from my helmet (again from the hail), but our party all made it down safely and in time for In-and-Out in Hemet.
I heard of one person being helped down hypothermic, hopefully there weren't any critical cases.
I guess the moral of the story is to learn to read the signs of the weather for ourselves.
