You are letting a bunch of underage climbers (both guys and girls) post contact information about themselves. (ie msn etc) There are such things as sexual predators who prowl the internet, and I am willing to bet that some climbers are also sexual predators.

Well maybe I'm not very good at it, but trust me there are people that are far more adept then I am.
Probably this isn't an issue and it's been around for a while but I think there are safety considerations that need to be considered here. I don't want to be a pest and I don't want to alienate the younger users who are more than free to contact eachother. It just frightens me that it is so open on this site.

I wouldn't want that. Maybe don't let them post contact information. I dunno, maybe it's a stupid concern. Probably is. But I figured I would make it public. If everybody else thinks it's stupid than so be it.

Life is tough and sometimes short when you are stupid. These kids need to know that the net is a dangerous place. Personaly I have only climbed twice with blind internet dates/partners. at the verry least being a guy I would only go cragging with someone i didn't know. I would save the big climbs for after I get a feel for the person. I can't imagine a woman or under age girl hooking up with climbers on the site without checking with other users that they do know and or bringing a friend with them for the first date. I am not sure though how much the site can do to regulate partner wanted threads other than banning known scum. the problem is how do you know the scum?

I think now days we have forgotten something called "personal responsibility"
Every person is responsible for their actions, including what they post on the web.
Kids need to deal with this, or learn from their mistakes.
Last time I checked rc.com, didn't double as a babysitter for kids

My gilfriend (of six years) 13 yr old daughter spends way too much time on IM and who knows were else on the internet and I know she is stupid for it. She may get A's in school but she knows a whole lot less about the real world that she thinks she does. These kids think that they can't get STDs from oral sex and a bunch of other stupid $hit and they think they know everything. You can do a lot to try and protect your kids but at some point they just have to be smart enough to survive. A healthy dose of good luck helps as well.

granted we all cant be everywhere all of the time everytime to weed out the potential predators, perhaps we can do something (permissions, filters, etc) to have the young climbers involve parents for this section? no we arent here to be hall monitors, that's what parents are for, but if there is something that could be done to minimize any potential illegal activity, i'd say why not.

also, is there any liabily on rc.com's part should something negative occur?
just wondering.....

msn, AIM, etc. information is part of users' profiles anyway, regardless of age, gender, or thread. Your msn screen name is at the bottom of every one of your posts. My AIM (an old defunct one that I have been too lazy to remove, but nonetheless) is at the bottom of mine. And I am pretty sure lots of 14 year old kids had theirs in their profiles before they started posting to the kids thread. Also, even if they gave no email or chat info but just participate in that thread, they can still be contacted via PM by a resourceful perv- of coure, if pedophile abuse of the PM system is reported, we do have swift and sure ways of correcting that, to the extent of rc.com resource use. But that aside, seems the only surefire way to not let kids become prey on the internet is to not let them use the net at all.

Childhood is a time to learn those lessons while adults keep you from f---ing your life up too badly.
The consequences of hooking up with some nut job on the internet who claims to want to take you "climbing" is a rather harsh lesson.

personal responsibility is one thing for mistakes made, it's another thing if someone is deliberately trying to harm you. kids want to have fun and trust. hooking up with someone with malaligned intentions is not "personal responsibilty". kids are kids, and some can be really stupid, but placing "personal responsibilty" as you describe is really F*cked.

personal responsibilty is a valid point. it is up to the parents to keep their kids from hooking up with any strangers and to teach them that the internet and various other parts of life are not safe. if the kid is a spoiled headstrong brat that is determined to get their own way and thinks that anything a 42 year old geek with thinning hair trys to tell them is out dated and stupid then they just might have to take some personal responsibility for their own screw ups. I know for certain that it wasen't my parents fault when cops showed up at the house when we were teenagers.

When their email addresses get flooded with SPAM 10 fold, they will realize that posting their email on a web site isn't too smart, as all the search engine crawlers will pick it up, and it will be permanant record forever for all those looking for email addys.
Note-The email address that users can opt to show in their profiles is not vulnerable to search engine crawlers, as only logged on registered users can see email addys if a user has opted to show it in their profile.

This is a good post because its a reminder to all the teens out there to use their heads and be careful.
Its the kids responsibility to look out for themselves.
Its the parents responsibility to watch out for the kids.
Its our responsibility to climb hard, and maintain a nonrestrictive forum dedicated to further advancing climbing enjoyment for everyone, of all ages. This doesn't include cencorship, however, its does mean that it's in our own interest to not want 40 yr/olds picking up kids in our site. It would ruin the place. So, despite it not being our job to be babysitters, there's nothing wrong with keeping an eye out for the kids.

All I know is that if there were restrictions on youth at this site when I joined years ago, I would not have stuck around. I'd have been pissed. It'd be a stupid move, frankly, to place limits on people based on their age.

Seriously, you raise some valid issues. Issues that are as old as the pony express, the telephone, ham radio, and "pen-pals."
The fact that we're dealing with a (technologically speaking) "new" medium of communication does not change, but rather only emphasizes the age-old issue of freedom and personal rights versus censorship, rules and limitations imposed from without.
My personal opinion is that R.Com does a pretty good job of balancing the two. But, then again, no one (except Talks-to-Potts) has tried to hit on me here.
