I love this site and have used it a ton. I have found new places to climb and found a climbing partner. The free screen saver ad is quite annoying. It has a few pictures that are a little to provocative. I have to constantly change pages while I am at work or at school so I do not get in trouble. I know advertising really helps the site but is there any way that somthing a little more descent could be used.

Sorry if I sound like a whiner but I really like the site and do not want it to be over run with innapropriate links.

If you're talking about that "babe on all fours" photo, that's the reason I keep coming back! She is, after all, clothed (in a bikini). I get waaaay worse spam in my mailbox. Now THAT stuff is offensive.

You seem to be suggesting that provocative=innapropriate.

How on earth did you ever come to that conclusion?
Maybe in Provo but certainly not in my world!

You really DO having climbing on your mind!

Hint: Who is that one user who on occassio asks someone else to post photos (Like that woman) larger and withtin the thread? I'm guessing he can't do it on his own work computer....Anyway, you *might* want to killfile any threads by that user - because...welll...a postage stamp size photo, placed obviously in an ad banner, along with a car and a puppy photo is one thing, but that um...image.... covering a quarter of your screen and being the object of discussion (one in which it might appear you are participating....) is another.

For the record - I know some of you guys think that woman is hot, but the image does creep me out. What people will do for the money to pay the bills......

The discussion has come up more than once that the image is inappropriate for a website that asks it's users to refrain from "going there."

Here's an idea, and maybe rc.com has already implemented it. Who knows.

Make it so that partners (people who pay to play) have the option to turn off ads. And by the way, it's AD, like ADvertisement, not add.

Those who don't pay a dime for this site, like me for example, can sit back and enjoy or ignore the ads which keep the lights on.

1. I am not currently a paying member, but would definitely become one if that were the option.

2. We will also accept "advert" if you are of The Commonwealth.

You're going to get in trouble because of the tiny picture of the girl, or because you're looking at rc.com when you should be working??!!

Face the facts: Some people are offended by rock climbing itself. There is no arguing with someone who find things that you like to be socially or morally wrong. I just think that if someone finds something offensive then go where nothing offends you and keep it to yourself. Rc.com is privately owned and if the owners need to get advertisments that you don't like in order to provide the site to you then you either accept it or leave. They have made their choice to limit their customer base (because of ads) and it's only up to you if you are the one being excluded or not.

BTW, I donate to rc.com so that they stay around and provide content with as few of ads as possible and I still don't think I have any say in how they run their business.

In defense of the original poster of this thread, I do not want that advertisement in front of me when I browse either.

But what would the internet be if decent people didn't get flamed for wishing it were cleaner? :?

...actually, a smart company owner does listen to their client base and provides a product that they desire. Otherwise, they will eventaully go out of business...

But - I think I can say with a fair amount of certainty that the majority of this site's users prefre to keep the picture.. Not only that - if the site did decide to ask that advertiser to provide a more "wholesome" photograph for that spot - I have no doubt there would be a virtual memorial service mouring it's demise in Community.....

Too bad ColdClimb has registered his disaproval for the picture. I had a strange idea....and he would have been just the artist for the "project".....
I was just thinking that wouldn't you guys loooooove to see a ColdClimb type photoshop job where that woman was pasted to a rock wall (photo taken from a cliff top as she's nearing the top), with maybe a few quickdraws hanging from a climbing harness(not obstructing the "view," of course...), in a little cleavage-enhancing tank top.

Wait - even better....she's got one more bolt to clip, and she's biting rope.....

skibabeage -

I think that woman is gross too. I'm just toying with the boys, much the way they might play with a little n00b toting shiny new gear by oohing and ahhing over it all.....

For the record: When I see that picture, I think that probably the person wears a coating of greasy makeup to cover icky skin, that there's probably a bit (just a teensy bit) of Photoshop going on, and that the photographer who shoots that sort of work is probably.....*shudder*....I haven't even words for that sort of creature.

It truly does amaze me that a lot of men simply do not consider those factors when viewing a picture like that. I see women like that (well....she is a little extreme, but you know what I mean) walking down the streets and the guys go tripping over themselves to get a look, and I'm thinking "Ick....That's not .....clean....why would you want to touch that?"

But, as has been shown for all of time, men (in general) think differently than women (in general) when it comes to what we find sexually intriguing. I am just happy that I am not "that" sort of woman. I can't imagine what a day in the life must be like....

I have never seen a single advert, good or bad, on RC.com
I guess the AD BLOCKING feature of Norton Internet Security 2004 really does work.

From your post it seems like you are obviously a person that offends easily, so why not do what you can to resolve the problem for YOURSELF before you try changing how the rest of the world views the internet.

You know, a lot of things piss me off, smoking, religion, and stupid ass people to name a few. But I don’t expect them to disappear just because I disapprove so I do what I can’t to remove MYSELF from them.

sometimes the route names are more offensive than a little bikini picture. maybe you should stop climbing - after all - its *very* offensive. maybe we should rename such routes becuase they are hurting our sensitive minds. just an idea ...

Dave

As climbers and consumers (personal and business consumers of products including rc.com) our culture has been desensitized to all types of "questionable" content. And yes Questionable can and does equal Inappropriate and Offensive. For those that get really "Pornographic" spam, might I suggest a spam filter to help stem some of your most base motivations / drives. It might also be pointed out that there are specific segments of our society who have been extremely vocal about criticism directed towadrs their personal preferences and conduct. Their soluition: "Tollerance" My personal views allow me to recognize and not condone the sin without destroying the sinner.

It is my choice rather to participate in some of the "Questionable" threads occasionally found on rc.com. Though my moral standards are much more conservative than some, you will not find me harranging those that obviously don't share my views.

It is far more difficult to personally eliminate or minimize "PUSH" type advertisements directed to the participant / viewer of a web site. It is my belief that as a supporter of rc.com that I have "One dollar one vote!" My vote is to ask the "Ownership" of rc.com to please eliminate "Push" type advertisements that some find offensive and would not want to share with minors (who particpate on this site) and to work to ensure that the climbing community is not portrayed as a group of completely hedonistic people without conscience or concern for the public image of their sport. themselves personally and the areas that we frequent.

It is very interesting to see everyone's comments on this post. I put it up becuase I really do not like the picture in question and would rather it not be there. I am not the person who controlls this site and have no plan to take some kind of action. I love the site and will continue to use it. I just do not like that picture.

I do not consider myself easily offended, I am not trying to preach to anyone nor do I expect to change anyone's views.

There's been so much freakin' discussion about this single ad, but I have no idea what ad everyone is talking about . I get ads for On Sale Edelweiss Dry Ropes and Edelrid Equipment through "Ads by Google" (that's what it says at the bottom). Could someone send me a link or something ...

confused.
