I just found out that I might get transferred to Hanover, Maryland. I haven't been back East since 1985 and only climbed in the gunks and North of there. Is there any decent climbing in the area? I only say "decent" because currenty I'm an hour from Taquitz and 1 1/2 from JT, so I'm a bit biased. Thanks, Smitty

Decent is relative. The closest that might compare is probably Seneca Rocks in WV. There are plenty of smaller crags too.

Thanks! Guess out here we take it for granted.... I remember a couple of quarries in PA, but I'm sure they're gone by now...Cost of living could be a huge trade-off though... Smitty

In reply to: Decent is relative. You can say that again. There is close stuff. But nothing that rivals j-tree and taquitz besides seneca. Just learn to love the short choss piles.

Rocks State Park is small, but fun. Annapolis is a great area. Huge roofs, neat hike in, great views. Theres some climbing in Cumberland at the Narrows and a few active climbers there as well, friendly and would show a feller around to boot. Not too far from Cumberland is Cooper's Rock. Great area. Great Falls/Carderock. Area seems pretty quiet on the week nights... Brian in SLC

You could also head to Virginia. Skyline Drive (?) is a nice area. I picked up the guidebook for West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland. It shows some nice places in Virginia. I have yet to visit any of the crags listed in Maryland.

Errraahhh...memory...there's a adventure school type thing in town, run by a local climber (in the phone book, I recall). He has some beta. Another thing you could do is go there. The climbing area is pretty visible from the "narrows". There's some high cliffs up and to the right of where folks park (might be the newer development you've heard about), but, the main lower area has been a climbing area for many years. Main crack in the prominant face is called, I think, Copperhead. Also a few bolted face routes in the woods to the left (not far from an old smoke stack). Neat area, with a bunch of local railroad type history, etc. Good luck... Also some climbing on the hill/cliff above Harper's Ferry... Brian in SLC

Gdday, I'm an Ausssie here for a year, DC is definately not the hot option if you're a climber, but I climb most weekends, we end up doing a lot of driving. NRG is excellent (5 hours), Seneca, Nelson, Franklin are 3 hours and ok, Gunks is 5 hours and good, there's lots of smaller stuff scattered around MD, VA, PA that is ok, plus some good bouldering apparently. Oh yes, Europe is really close too... Drop us a line if you come over

Just a quick word about the narrows in cumberland. The climbing is indeed very good and the rock is just like seneca crossed with the gunks, however take the loose rock precautions seriously. Not trying to be a nanny, i just had my closest call there less than a month ago. Pulled off a 4' x 4' x 3' boulder about 40 feet up a 5.9 in the funland area. Did a little math when i got home and figured it weighed abou 3000 pounds. I and my belayer were lucky enough to get away with scratches (how we just got scrathches from a boulder that big is beyond me) In any event check out Jim Pick Wall at 7+ for a Madame G's like experience, and cucumber honey at 8+. Both are excellent. Have fun and be safe!

There are some smaller places in Ellicott City that arent that great but are close, depending on where you live. There is always Earth Treks too.

Hey yaall. I'm going to be in Southeast MD and will have all day Sunday, Sept 26th free. Anyone up for a day of climbing? Gotta be back to work Monday morning so no long drives but I'm willing to put a few miles on the rental car.

yes -- you should definitly check out Earthtreks- a very good gym (haven't seen their new location). The hermitage/schaffer rocks is nice place to climb. not very extensive, but good quality and a beautiful place. Just across the PA border, along the AT.

Anybody free the 26th? Will be Southeast of DC and have no idea what's in the area. I'll drive if anybody want to go somewhere to climb for the day.

Thanks, Smitty From your user name, I assume you prefer traddy routes. Well, if that's the case, then I have three words for you my brother in trad: Old. Rag. Mountain. Four more: Laser. Cut. Granite. Splitters. Seriously, it's like a tiny little Yosemite. OK, so it's in VA, not MD, but definitely put it as high on your list as Seneca. Also remember that the New and the Gunks are both within weekend road trippin' distance. From DC, both are approximately 5 hours. Leave late Friday, get back late Sunday.

Anyone in that area that is looking to develop an entirely new region, needs to give VERY strong consideration to the steep high-walls along the Upper Yough river!!! While I'm not sure about access, I can tell you all that this is virgin territory, because the approach would require rafting or kayaking in to just below "Bastard Falls", and the entire section from "Bastard Falls" to "Heinzerling" is a veritable smorgasboard. Boulderers would cry if they could see the rocks at both "Heinzerling" and "Cheeseburger Falls". Cheeseburger can be hiked into along the railroad grade that leads up upstream from Friendsville, MD on the east side of the river. Another pristine climbing location, is along the access road immediately above the confluence of Big Sandy creek and Cheat River (just outside of Albright, WV). This particular area reminds me a lot of Junkyard at NRG. Area boaters will clearly know the 2 locations that I'm referring to! 8^)

I hiked there about a year ago... saw one or two old bolts.... a lot of good rock, but it seemed like the climbs would be spread out over difficult terrain.... which isn't a bad thing I suppose... -Ben
