I admit it. I have a problem. I just can’t pass up a good deal. And with REI’s Labor Day sale, I’ve gone and done it again. I mean, seriously, how many pairs of rock shoes does one really need? Of course you gotta have your steep face climbing shoes for sport, comfy all-day multi-pitch trad shoes, some slippers or velcros for bouldering, some smearing shoes for slab climbing, and so on. What about back-ups when you have to send a pair out for a resole? And when you come across a deal on a pair that’s actually cheaper than a resole… why not? After last night’s purchase of some mad rock hookers for 30 bucks, I’m up to 6 pairs of rock shoes. And I thought women were bad… But hey, I’ve only spent a total of $150 on those 6 pairs of shoes. That’s about what a lot of people spend on one pair of shoes. Only one of those pairs rarely gets used.
So how many pairs do you have? Anyone else have the same inability to pass up a sweet deal on gear they don’t need? I find this happens to me often…

I can't pass up backpacks or bags. I've so much stuff that another bag to help keep things organized is always needed. I've even got the smaller Rubbermaid boxes for the back of the SUV to putt all my stuff in. One of the boxes is just for different types of bags, packs etc. so if I need to narrow down needed gear I can do so for each outing. I had 13 packs at one time but have since sold a few on Ebay. My wife won't let me buy any more.
But now the kids need thier own and we don't have the right sizes for them. There's at least 3 I could buy right now with a 'need'. It never ends.

I have maybe 17 pairs of shoes? In varying states of repair. Many should probably just be tossed they're so thrashed. I have a stock of probably 5 new pairs of shoes that were under $40 a pair so I don't need to buy shoes for quite some time.

I totally agree... Between REI and EMS' sales this week, I have bought two rain shells, shell pants, and a set of cross country skis with boots and bindings...all total under $200...
Now my only problem is that Rock and Snow in New Paltz is also having a 15% sale according to their website...

If I get caught buying one more thing I am in soooo much trouble! Boyfriend caught me looking online for short ropes and shoes the other day. Need to remember to delete history...

Yeah man, working there is rough. Last week I picked up $400 worth of assorted climbing gear (12 draws for $50!) for $100 and last night I picked up a pair of K2 Tele Skis and Garmont Synergys ($920 RV) for $199. Go me.

I make $5.65 an hour at Papa merfeis Pizza in Parker. I wish that I had the problem of not being able to pass up a sail but I am just a poor 16 year old. Who ones an $80 Pair of 5-10 approach shoe.

Sweet scores dude. Gotta love the $.83 sales! Did you get the Positron draws? Those garmonts are nice boots...G-fit right? I almost snagged a pair, but alas, I will get by with the old t2's for another season :|

If it's on sale, it's mine. this may be why i tend to live on a steady diet of ramen... or i just like the taste. Of couse, i won't buy it from more than 5 cents a pack. Gives me another reason to wait for a sale.

I started last month off by spending what money I had managed to save on a car-camping/backpacking trip to Acadia and the White Mountains. I came back home with almost $ 4 in my regular account and around $ 20 in the savings account (which is linked to back up the regular account when I overdraw). I still had the insurance and loan payments for my 4runner staring me in the face. At the end of the month - just starting to get my head above water - I get the REI advert about the sale. The same day I got the flyer I was in the store in Timonium and purchasing the MH Approach tent. I had to use the remnants of my coin jar to pay for the footprint (which was also on sale).
I already have a single man Eureka, a Hennessey hammock, and an OR Advanced Bivy.
I had planned on buying a shelter to use this Easter in the Adirondacks (which is how I justify spending over $ 200 right now). I saved almost $100 - right?

My problem as of lately is with my tent. I bought the quarter dome from REI only to realize that it's a bit too small for liking but the weight is great. Now this the 3rd tent I've purchased and returned (all unused) @ REI and their great return policy. Believe me' I don't like to abuse their policy and never return anything used, but getting the right tent is a very personal thing :lol: So, on my last trip there(which is only 10 min from my house and the local crag!!danger!!) I stumbled upon their Labor Day sale when it just started. ON THE FIRST DAY!! Regardless to say, I left w/ titanium sporks(wha..?), another Nalgene bottle, another ATC XP just in case the first one breaks, more slings, a cooking set on sale that I read on Backpacker(while explaining to girlfriend...but it made "Backpacker's editor's choice" and it's Telon coated hon, Teflon!! ... walks away rolling her eyes) some HB Locking biners on clearance, a lightweight blizzard proof jacket ( I live in Cali.) which was 1/2 off the the sale price. $40 from o.g. of $200. And I did end up upgrading my tent for the final time w/ the money I supposedly saved. My lovely new Sierra Design Hyperlight AST weighing in @ 5lbs. w/ room for almost 3(or all my freakin climbing shoes). Thanks Rob from tents @ REI. You know that hike from the Subie to the camp site is such a freakin trek but @ 5lbs it's as Trango would say..a Cinch :shock: Now I'm home looking @ Sierra Outpost. Hiking boots for $30. Whaa? Thank god I only just climb. I don't need another addiction. Gotta go and look for a second job. My girfriend is threatning to leave me for Rob from tents @ REI. THANKS ROB!! :evil: Hmmmmm ramen does taste better w/ a Titanium Spork. I'm retarded. 8^)

I have bought three pairs, and found one, so I guess that I'm not really overdoing it on the shoes. But carabiners are a different story, I buy at least one every time I walk into REI. You can never have enough gear.

I got Nicros Micros sets 1, 2, and 3, along with three sets of larger Nicros holds for $110 from a guy here on RC.com. My brother bought a motorcycle without his wife's permission, so needed money to buy a kevlar jacket. That's how I got a $450 North Face Summit Series shell and a Denali jacket for $350. I traded 700 rounds of .308 sniper ammo (got a good deal on it too and still have more) for his now ex-wife's $350 North Face pack. I wasn't even really looking to buy anything, but immediately bought a Black Diamond Dyno AL harness for $20 from Mountain Gear. I am addited to deals. I can't wait for the 2005 gear to come out so I can nab up some '04 closeouts. I predict overtime in my future.
