I'm anticipating a few backpacking and climbing trips in southern california over the next year or so. My girlfriend has just moved to San Diego for grad school. I've recently had the chance to take her on a few climbs and a hiking trip in fairly rugged and remote backcountry (over here in the northeast), and she's very interested in doing some more. Obviously Joshua Tree comes immediatly to mind -- beautiful country to camp in and explore, and copius climbing... What other recommendations do people have for SoCal? She's an eager but totally inexperienced beginner. I'm a solid moderate climber, comfortable leading gunks/dacks 5.6/5.7, and some solid experience on sandstone (Red Rocks). My preferred style is long moderate leads away from the crowds, but obviously we'll be more focused on single pitch and TR for the moment. She's also an eager but inexperienced hiker, but she's totally game for the hard stuff, I think. So, any climbing recommendations? and any tips on places that are just plain fun to explore and hike in? any tips on Mexico? all advice welcome.

The California portion of the routes DB will dive tons of info on climbing. If you're looking for backpacking as well, consider the high sierra, although most of the routes are multi-pitch. For single pitch, there are spots all over. Obviously Yosemite/Bishop/Mammoth/Lone Pine for the eastern sierra. It all depends where you are going to be. For San Diego, Mission Gorge has lots of single pitch stuff. Check out the San Diego Climbers Coalition for info and guides on lots of local san diego climbing.

Suicide rock is the shiznizzle. Make sure to check out Hart Park in Orange for some bum climbing and tendon tweaking.

If you want to combine great hiking with the climbing then Joshua Tree is the place to go. Curt

If you are more into trees than cactus, you can't go wrong with Idyllwild. more bouldering than routes.

Tahquitz and Suicide are great, but they are not what you are after. If you want to get away from people, you need to get to the South Sierra (SS). 5.7.................. hmm, I think one route on the Obelisk is 5.7. It was a pretty good climb and a good day's hike to get there. The harder climbs are better, but the hike may not be worth it for one climb. Also, Aquaman on Bart Dome is 5.7 - I think, (disclaimer: I never did it, but there are a lot of great harder climbs). Bart Dome is another good 8-hour backpack. You will get away from every one like you want. The problem for you and your girlfriend is you are on your own. Anything goes wrong you both better know how to deal with it because you will not see anyone else. There is a lot of great long granite climbs in the SS. Have fun!
