Well, I love trad...but sport is well, faster and you use less gear, lighter backpack, safer, more climbing time, ok, ok, I guess it's true I like sport better...What do you like and why? Always climb as often as you can! H.

I LIKE IT ALL!!! It does'nt matter to me. Its all climbing! I used to be just a trad climber. Then I realized that my closed mind was holding me back from alot of good experiences. Now I go all over and climb everything. I see and climb at more places than I ever imagined. But trad will always be first in my heart. [ This Message was edited by: crackaddict on 2002-05-19 08:37 ]

TRAD, sport is fun for its pure athleticism. However, Trad is way more challenging and satisfying. It combines all aspects of climbing that I love, hard climbing, gear knowledge, rope work, solitude (most of the time) LOTS of altitude, variety. All this, in one good, long climb. Most of the greatest climbs on earth are trad. Whatever your pleasure, ROCK ON!

I like to do it all. Bouldering, toproping, sport, trad. Although i do see it all as just practice for trad. I do the first 3 because they make me better at Trad. Maybe the next step is bigwall?

Sport, Trad, Bouldering, Top-Roping, in that order. Sport is more sustained- just clip and climb. No foolin' around with gear placement, or the "second" cursing the leader when a piece of gear gets welded, or long hanging belays. Long live Sport climbing! However, I AM against bolting routes that can be climbed Traditionally. If the rock has gear placement options, I believe it should ber Trad climbed.

re: Mountainrat: trad hanging belays: You need to roll down to North Carolina with me sometime before you leave. (something like the Great Arch or the Nose or, I'm told, anything at Moore's Wall, will give you good elevation and exposure, without the blocky sandbagging of the South End at Seneca) Most classic trad routes are NOT characterized by an out-of-shape leader putting TCUs where they're liable to walk from the rope movement on a traverse, nor do most people take 2 friggin' hours to lead the traverse on Ecstasy... don't judge the sport by my bad day . Nothing to get welded on the Arch, for example. Seneca has always caught me off guard and last trip was no exception. Now that that's out of the way... Personally I choose trad because it's usually less of a clusterf--- as far as crowds, ghetto blasters, gumbies, etc. go. I don't have much of a basis to judge sport climbing on, it sounds like Potrero Chico et. al would be just fine as far as the adventure quotient goes, it's just that I got used to climbing in the Gunks and elsewhere in the Northeast, and by the time I saw a reasonable sport crag out West, it was already too late I'll take the Needles over Thailand any day, and I've been to both. I guess I prefer solitude over ease-of-use. Mostly I like long moderate routes that have nice scenery and get you way off the ground, and most of those tend to take gear. *shrug* (eg. Matthes Crest -- but is that really "trad" if you just weave the rope? The Arch -- what if you don't bother with any nuts or cams? The great routes in Tuolumne and the Needles and RMNP and on Cannon are all trad or alpine, but the point is I like getting "out there" more than I like fiddling with gear -- it is more of a necessary evil.) who ever said sport climbing had to stay single pitch? The longest sport climb North of mexico is in my backyard! (well, not litrally) it's a 21 pitch 11b i believe...I wanna it! I've done a few 10 pitch 5.6's that I really enjoyed. I really like doing long, easy stuff, or extremely hard scarmbles with rope. However, I'll have to say my favorite type of climbing is on ice! It's less physical (my weakness ) and more techical skill.

re: Bow Valley sport climbs: Yeah, but aren't those routes basically 5.11 moves on kitty litter? Point taken, Potrero Chico is apparently also like that. Just because a route is long, does not mean it must be trad. (I want to make it down to Potrero, if it is not "closed" for good now) Ice can be a great way to get up high, I was very pleased by the exposure at Willoughby when I made it up there. La Pomme D'Or is apparently like that too, but I can't climb WI5+ to the best of my knowledge, so that will have to wait :-)

i'll take u (and all the other NH babes) trad climbing. You see, the #1 rule of trad climbing is that you can't wear a shirt, and you must wear a thong.

Personally speaking, I'm not skilled enough nor geared up enough to trad ... BUT, that's where my heart is (mostly because I'm a tree-huggin hippy chick who wants to preserve the rock for generations to come). I sport right now because I've got the gear for it, and I dont feel like I'm ready to start setting my own gear just yet. Of course, I look forward to the day that I'm rich and famous and can afford all the trad gear that I want and the most elite guides to teach me everything that I always wanted to know about climbing and safety and all the rest of it ... Until then, I'll just stick with the painfully slow cycle of save, scrape, buy in order to get my toys. [ This Message was edited by: clymbr_chk on 2002-05-19 07:19 ]

I would have to go with sport. I have never done trad so i cant really say which one i like better. I am not experiance enough to try some of the longer, harder sport routes. I am sure i would like trad just becasue the fact that it is climbing and i love climbing! Climb ON! JD

Personally - between the two I like sport. It allow me to push myself physically and mentally to my maximum potential. Bouldering will do this also. I can't afford all the trad gear. Trad will push a person more mentally. I think you have to have a bigger set of gonads to do hard trad within your ability. One aspect I like about sport is that I can climb much more in one day than climbing trad. Trad takes to much time. I can easily climb 2-3 sport routes to 1 trad route. Just my opinion.

Sport I like climbing the most when you can almost forget about that rope, I mean when you can climb like it was solo. So I choose sport (or bouldering) instead of trad. The only thing I don't like is that sport climbing needs bolts, which makes the climbs less "natural".

I am into bouldering dude it is by far the simplest from of climbing true you don't go high but thats why you make a crash pad instead of buying one of those super exspensive pads and you start doin some high ballinplus it is nice and cheap but between sport and trad if I had the money I would go with trad

First I would say trad because it's self-sufficient and total freedoom that allow some aspects of adventurous outdoor pursuit, secondary only to alpine mountaineering. Bouldering is next because of the physical challenge. I like sport too but like top-roping it's somewhat limited and I'm not talking about the number of routes.

Trad!! I learned to climb in the 70's in North Carolina and trad was all we had. I have done some sport but it's just not as much fun as a good trad route in Linville Gorge or Moores Wall.
