Climate change kids! This is the end effect! Maybe we should grow gills and learn to climb in the rain

We should petition enviroment canada to place weather stations at all the popular outdoor spots around ontario that not only check current weather, but also how wet/dry the rock is, that'd be great eh?

Seriously weird weather... I was at Rattlesnake all weekend and saw it all .
When we got out there this morning it was 5 degrees C. Mid-morning we were down to t-shirts at the bottom of the cliff and sweating. Then there was a wicked temp drop and it snows for a bit(!). Early-afternoon it warmed again, snowed again, warmed, then ice-pellets... MAN I wish it would make up its mind .

I was outdoor a bit this weekend and damn it it's snowing in May. I know May sometime isn't warm but this is getting crazy. What ever happened to the global warming thing?

Christ man don't wish for global warming! IT'll mean that we'll get more rain and precipitation and less time at the crag! If we continue on the path that we're on our climate will resemble BC's within the next 10 years. And they get so much rain that people walk around with umbrella's all the time.

I guess we could grow gills and learn to climb in the rain.

If you guys really want to know, it is our fault and a global society for causing this weather. our warming of the earth has cause some major changes to weather and more resently the jet streem that run from north west down to the states and up the st. laurence has been behaving really funny.

I actually prefer climbing in colder weather, I find that it lengthens my climb quite a bit. It takes me at least twice as long to warm up and twice that again to get too tired to continue on. Bring on the cold is what I say!

You mean to tell me that people in Ontario don't have gills?
WHat?!! You don't have webbed toes either?
My god!!! What is that flaming ball of light in the sky? Eyes...squinting...HELP...must...get...sunglasses.
*** Fact: Smoking marijuana can perminantly make your eyes extreemly sensitive to light.
***Fact: Vancouver boasts some of the lowest records of sunlight per year, and the highest pot smoking population.

My visit to vancouver included shopping for an umbrella, buying one, watching it break under the weight of the first rainfall, going back into said store and returning it in it's original package (I changed my mind, I want the big one... No no I haven't used the umbrella yet, look at the date on this receipt, I was here a minute ago!) and I promptly bought the most expensive umbrella I could find. The rest of my stay in bc was punctuated by fog, brief but intense periodes of sun, followed by rain. At least it was an extremely picturesque place.

Well last night was all watm and sunny so we went out to twiss. Now the bugs were insane. Swarms of biting black flies. I mean it was like those off commercials where the guy sticks his hand into an aquirium of bugs. The flies were that dense.

Can anyone recomend a good bug spray, it looks like its going to be a buggy summer

yeah, and as soon as the blackflies are gone the place will be full of skeeters all summer . Muskol: I swear by it, but anything loaded up with DEET. Just don't let any of it touch any of your nylon gear or ropes... it's a nasty solvent.

Yeah it's going to be buggy this summer. Remember the Lady bug problem last year? Experts are saying they'll be back and worse. A good bug spray is Muskol but if you want something less (shall we say smelly) most of the OFF products aren't bad. Or go to an army surplus store and get yourself a good ol' can of DEET.

I swear you some of you guys in Ont. think Vancouver is the all of B.C.

The driest, warmest, long season for climbing in all of Canada is located in B.C. and it's not anywhere near Vancouver.

The blackflies were in force at Metcalfe Rock today. A nylon screen mesh head and shirt cover kept this belayer sane. Available at MEC, Sojourn, etc. A non-deet natural bug spray called Bush Splash was somewhat effective (less so than deet based products but better than nothing). Deet is lethal to any nylon, ie. your rope.

They weren't lady bugs, they were some crazy chinese lady bug looking thing. They bite for one thing.

I think that you should try climbing with one of those bug suits, you know the netting and stuff? You just need your hands free right?

It'll look goofy though.

A "bug suit" is what we used for the belayer. It does get warm inside one of those things unless there is a breeze to ventilate through the mesh. Perfect for coolish bug invested days.
