Rappelling Accident in Phoenix?

I just caught the last few seconds of a Phoenix radio report about an apparent rappelling accident and death. I wasn't paying much attention until I heard "Waterfall Trail" and something about falling 200 feet.

The only place I could think of, given the partial information I heard, is the Waterfall Trail in the White Tanks. As I recall, the rappel from the top of the waterfall is less than 200 feet, but that huge wall up the canyon from the waterfall is much taller.

Does anyone have more info?

According to azfamily.com, a 39-year-old Hungarian immigrant went hiking alone in the White Tanks. They found his body just before noon. The story on the news said he was climbing and azfamily first said he was climbing, then said he was hiking. He appeared to have been alone.

Maybe more details will emerge, but it is probably a case of the news using climbing the way non-climbers frequently do, e.g., "You climb? Well let's go climb Camelback [using the hiking trail]. Ropes? What for?"

Actually, I just noticed that the story also said that crews reportedly found a backpack, a harness and a rope hanging from a 500-foot cliff face.

Well, it wasn't me.

I suppose I should call my mother... she would worry about such things, and I don't want her to get her blood pressure up.

All the routes around the waterfall area are less than 150 ft +- according to the guide(you can rap 'em with a single 60m, go figure). The only area that may even approach 200' vertical is the fall factor area which is 350+-. Since it is up on the top, maybe they were adding. Nothing more to add, other than this is a fun, if loose area.
