I know this sounds stupid, but I like all climbing. There is a BIG oak tree in my back yard that I would love to climb. Has anyone tried using rock climbing gear for tree climbing????

Yes... I used webbing to set up a lead climb on a giant oak tree. It was really easy to climb and the protection wasn't really necessary but fun none the less. Careful though the bark on the tree will tear up rope so use a crappy one if u wish to persue ur inner squirrel!!! :D

I think those arborists (sp?) use a static rope vs a dynamic. Better protection from the bark.

I haven't done this, but I know people who've climbed up big dead trees using crampons and axes (on toprope, I think). Not sure why they did it, but sounds interesting. I have free-soloed many a tree in sneakers, but never using gear.
