What are some decent inexpensive leashes for someone just starting out ice climbing?

1" webbing, knotted. Worked for me for 2 years.

Then you start leading hard and you switch to Androids or leashless.

I like the Grivel Free Leashes. Cheap and easy.

Or make your own with webbing, I've done that too. But the factory leash is easier to remove and put back on when you're pumped on that curtain.

I'll ditto the BD lockdown leash. Not sure if 15 bucks per is spendy to ya or not...if so, not too hard to rig your own out of webbing. You can make a leash pretty similar to the BD slider out of a couple different sizes webbing (1 inch to kinda pad the thinner webbing at the bottom where the bottom of your wrist sits) and a slider out of any stiff tubing with a small pull cord rigged to position it up and down.

However, I really like the lockdown leash. Easy in, easy out, easy to adjust.

I'm a beginner but I vote for the BD Androids. Leave the leashes on your wrists and just unclip half-way up your tool with your thumb. VERY easy when you need to drop your arms quickly for a moment and let the blood back in. All the other leashes were too difficult to take off in a hurry and time-consuming to put back on while your wearing heavy gloves. Sorry they are x-pensive though ($50) but you'll only ever need 1 pr and they're not wearing out.

Didn't he say inexpensive? That would eliminate the andriod for sure. The BD lockdown is the goods. The grivel free leash is also good (same design). Stay away from the BD slider or any designs that require two hands or a hand & teeth to put on / take off. Twist leashes are OK if you don't let go of the tool to use your hands on rock occasionally. In this situation they unwind while the tool is hanging. Bad.

Notice I did say "Sorry". I decided to included it because I thought it was a WORTHY addition of advice for a beginner, as I was one when I found them. I borrowed and had purchased other leashes as mentioned (cheaper) and returned them. I thought they were worth scraping a few x-tra beans together.

But tools + leashes are all personal subjective items...?? Beginners on Ice sometime need all the help they can get to climb better..! :D
