Gym? What's a Gym? I haven't been to a gym for a long, long time! I learned on rock and I climb rock. That's all there is to it. Indoors you don't have the fresh air, birds, and sport routs! Pablo

In reply to: I was really, pefectly happy to climb inside, all the time. Until I went rock climbing outside for the first time. Now it *could* have had something to do with all the ridiculously fun people I met on that trip, or all the alchohol my 17 year old self couldnt remember drinking the next morning, or the ridiculously hot guys that climbed or the fact that when I was piss scared as s--- trying to lead a 5.10 I leaned in to get my balance and smelled the rock. Nothing quite smells like warm rock. And then when I finished the route I looked out over the gorge. I dunno, though, you take ur pick of the reasons. I love real rock. hope those weren't happening at the same time......

....how on earth can you compare?.... it's almost a different sport.... like skydiving in a gym.... ....that said, the gym has enough pros to encourage its use to climbers in order to satisfy a certain craving, especially when the weather craps out.... for me the gym is a way to keep strong, but more importantly to socialise with my climbing peers during the week and make plans for weekends and holidays outside.... .... I would never forgive myself if I injured a finger or ankle badly while cranking in the gym.... it's not worth it.... I'd rather spend the money on fuel to the crag....

In reply to: ......but lets not denounce the importance of the networking that can be done at your local climbing gym. How many partners have you found on a Tuesday night while bouldering at the gym? Never.
In reply to: Your local gym is often the cornerstone of a climbing community. It allows us to stay in contact with other cimbers throughout the off season, meet partners, girl friends (or boy friends)......but most importantly we bond with other climbers. Ledts be honest the climbing in your local gym probably isn't the main reason your there night after night......it's feeling like you're missing something by not attending. So if your asking which is more fun without a dought it's real rock........but gym climbing can be just as important to your outdoor accomplishments. The problem I find with gyms is that they are filled with people that have this perspective. I don't go to a gym to connect with their fallacious "we are the cornerstone of the climbing community" social scene, I go to climb because of weather or other circumstances. The climbing community is found out your local rock and if you left your gym you might know that.

are you kidding me? such a question exists? Gyms are ridiculous. I refuse to go to one and havent in at least 9 months. And 9 months ago it reaffirmed my sentiments. damn it i need to vent, excuse me while my head blows up.

Even though when most people get the taste of outdoors, they never look back.... which is a good thing....

It's called ROCK CLIMBING for a reason, not plastic climbing!! The gym is for rainy days and training! But I do enjoy gym sessions Jamaica 8^)

I found the gym to be a very valuable prelude to climbing outside. I started climbing at a gym last year. It was there I learned most of the baiscs...how to put on your harness, tie in and belay safely. The gym had a bunch of safety regulations that are also the same rules one should follow outside for safety's sake. I also learned some basic climbing techniques. Most importantly, being able to climb at the gym helped me to understand that climbing isn't just for the young folks who are in prime shape. Even older people with some flab can succede. After spending the winter in the gym, I went outside. I was already comfortable with tying in and belaying. I then had to merely focus on climbing. I learned that while there are some basic similarities, climbing outside is very different. It's much more vaired. And I thought it was much more fun. But still I think that my time in the gym gave me a basic skill set to draw on, as well as some confindence. For example, I don't think anyone would have been able to get me to traverse at 60 feet off the ground had I not done it in the gym at 3 feet. And my gym doesn't replicate slab climbing well (which I learned I seem to naturally do better at) Now that I'm back in the gym, I'm seing a new crop of new climbers learning in the gym. I feel bad for them, as over the summer our gym has switched from ATC devices to gri gris, and from tying in to locking beaners. I dont' think the new climbers are learning as safe a technique as I did. Still the gym can give you valuable experience for a variety of reasons. Gym and rock are different. One is not necessarily better. If you happen to be someone who prefers the gym, for whatever reason, don 't listen to those who criticize you. Climb for the reasons you want, and to achieve the goals you want, and don't let anyone's opinions stop you from enjoying it.

can't plug trad in the gym. Out side's way better. But when it's snowing and covered with ice, it's time to pull plastic. Last time I was outside, it started snowing on me. still climbed till dark then went home and had some hot tea.

while I love the outdoors, I like the safety of the gym - being able to climb with the security of a top rope (of course, if I had the same security, I would rather climb real rock in the fresh air by far). Locally, the one place I can think of that would be a really fun climb is the Niagara gorge, and I'm only willing to go so far bouldering (and climbing there with the use of ropes invites fines). hmm..actually come to think of it, royalton ravine might have some decent spots (though nothing I would ache to climb up as much as the gorge wall).

Because there are way too many threads allready relating the two and there only seems to be one answer. This thread is providing nothing to the site that was not allready here........

In reply to: Which is better, the gym or the real deal??? none of the two is better than the other, but the gym is good for getting stronger and the rock, besides the technique is, how you called "the real deal"

gym climbing has its benifits but real rock well... rocks. PS if you just climb in a gym because there is no real rock close by thats ok. but if you just climb in the gym and there is real rock close by then you suck
