Russian Expert Says Flu Epidemic May Kill Over One Billion This Year

The world is on the brink of a major flu epidemic — one that could claim more than a billion lives, the head of the Russian Virology Institute, Academician Dmitry Lvov said at a press conference organized by the RIA-Novosti news agency on Thursday.
“Up to one billion people could die around the whole world in six months,” Lvov said. The expert did not give a timeframe for the epidemic, but said that it is highly probable that it will start this year. “We are half a step away from a worldwide pandemic catastrophe,” the academic said.
The Russian expert said that U.S. researchers possessed data suggesting that if a pandemic hits, up to 700,000 people will fall ill in the United States. He said that the population of the United States can be roughly compared to that of Russia and thus the number of cases will be approximately the same.
The academician said the pandemic was most likely to be caused by the so-called bird flu stem. “The death rate among those who contract this type of flu reaches 70 percent,” Lvov said.
The expert called for the Russian authorities to prepare for the epidemic. The country will need a reserve of at least 300,000 hospital beds if an epidemic breaks out, he said.

There is a gaping hole in his reasoning that leads me to doubt the entire idea. He claims because the US and Russia have similar populations, death tolls would be similar. This is ludircrous, there are a variety of variables at work in death rates with this sort of thing, two of the key ones, diet (overall health) and quality of care are widely disproportionate from the States to Russia...

See this is the problem w/ flu shots. The body's immune system builds up a tolerance to these drugs, thus making the strands of the virus more potent then its predecessor... That said, the shot itself as we all know is actual self-injection of the flu - it doesn't prevent (duh, I know), just helps the body build up an immunity....
And shots are not meant for everyone - yet those who get them are still susceptible.
My point - flu shots bad. Survival of the fittest? I dunno. But, let the body do it's work...

I had a close friend catch that really heinous strain of flu in 1988, and it ultimately killed him a year ago today...
This strain was known to attack the heart and other primary organs. His heart was enlarged nearly 3 times, and he was actually on the transplant list for years. Eventually, several years of meds reduced the enlargement and got him off the list, but he was now susceptible to just about everything since his immune system was fried due to all the meds.
Bryson passed away on November 3rd, 2003. :cry:

Tim, I am incredibly sorry for your loss! I hope you were not offended by my post. I myself, hate medicines for the most part - sometimes they are a necessary evil - and rarely take them. Your friend is in my thoughts.

Well, IF 700,000 fall ill, and 70% of them die (I thought that the actual death rate of the bird flu was more like 10-20%?), it's still 999,510,000 to go to reach a BILLION... :roll:

While we have better health care, Americans travel more than Russians so are more likely to spread illness like this. And no, I don't have any sources to back up my claim that Americans travel more :roll:
