As the title says......why is it that so many people enjoy drinking while climbing? Does'nt it kinda not help performance wise?

Ok this is coming from someone who thinks smokin pot and drinking is bad for you athletically wise

It's simple. When you climb, you are typically in nature. When in nature there is a lot of sitting around... no TV, etc. Less distractions. Our common world promotes distractions, hence watching TV includes using a remote... a very good thing to keep you busy if TV isn't enough. None the less, you climb, and then you wait, either waiting to get on the route or back at the campsite. We want to climb and we have nothing else to do if we aren't belaying or doign something else so... we drink, smoke, chew, whatever the hell you do to keep you busy. Beer also helps some of those pains at the end of a hard climbing day. It's like when I played Rugby, the first thing you wanted after the game was a fat joint or a beer.

So, to sum up why (without babbling anymore) climbing and beer is connected:
1. Lots of sitting around when you are waiting to get on the rock = beer.
2. Sore at the end of the day = lots of beer.
3. One more: Long drive to destination = beer.

I don't associate beer drinking with climbing as in drinking while climbing. But a beer or three after a good day of cragging is sooooo gooooood! :D :D :D

I don't really associate drinking while i climb. but afterwards its just the social aspect and for a fun time.

now like beanricecheese said.....RUGBY AND DRINKING go hand in hand....nothing better then chugging a beer during half time.

I don't think beer and climbing are directly connected.

Rather Beer is connected to climbers & climbers are connected to climbing.

Its a two stage thing.

I don't think the association between beer and climbing is some anomally. beer is associated with pretty much all desirables: sex, money, cars, friends, goodtimes... climbing is also a marketable activity, just look at the commercials around you. Beer is seen as something that can benefit all occassions. You see? You are asking the wrong questions, you should be asking why beer is associated with any of these things. The answer is media allows the spirits industry to make money through these associations.

Or it could be that good just dulls the pain and makes life more fun, I like to think that as someone who studies media as my major I fall into this category and not that category of brainwashed masses (probably wishful thinking though).

I guess what it really comes down to is

Beer = good
climbing = good
beer + climbing = really good

Climbing is a gateway drug. Watch out. First some beer, then a little weed, and before you know it you'll be addicted to crack in no time.

Trad is always a bunch of fun cause the gear gets harder to hold on to, adding a little to the difficulty.

Of Course!

You will never climb at your limit if you have to hold a beer in one hand. Although if the first accent is done that way, its common practice to repeat in style....

You forgot an important word in your question...*good*.

Why is *good* beer associated with *good* climbing...? Because *Good* things seem to go together. I don't think I've ever climbed with any Bud or Coors drinkers ( Pabst drinker 1x) Ha..! 8^)

To comment on prior posts...I don't think beer leads to smokin' crack and beer is for AFTER climbing. I don't climb with people with a beer in their hand while I'm on belay. What others do while they climb is their business. I'll wear my helmet in case they drop a bottle on my head....jeesh. Most of my partners/friends wait till we're done climbing. It's more fun to celebrate after.
