They seem to have fallen victim to the weather: http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/05/29/rainier.deaths.ap/index.html Thoughts to the families.

Man..That sucks! just goes to show you that weather gets way more people than falls do while mountaineering/alpining. One of my dad's climbing partners, Willi Unsoeld, died from a weather induced avalanche on Rainier. I remember that day like it was yesterday, even though it was 23 years ago. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

Something is going on out there in the Pacific Northwest. 7 climbers just fell into a crevasse at Mt. Hood. Looks like the rescue chopper crashed also. Here's the article. http://www.msnbc.com/news/759138.asp

the fact that the only surviving climber owes his/her life to a cell phone makes me inclined to bring mine along always...but I suppose that's a topic for another thread. Like this one: http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=2720&forum=23&34

Ya know, now that I have a cell phone I always bring it with me climbing. As long as I am in range it could save my ass or someone elses. When you have a critical injury seconds count.

Just got back from OSU climbing facility. The hood incident was an ice shelf falling or something like that. On Rainier 3 of the people are reported to be OSU students (106.3 KLOO fm radio). Still haven't heard too much about mt. hood, but doesn't look good. My thoughts go out to those of you that may have known any of the climbers and to the climbers themselves. Both these stories were the lead stories on all the network news channels. The Ranier one was due to the elements. The Hood incident was 9 firefighters climbing together. They fell into a 30' crevasse and the aerial photos looked like an ice shelf or something had given way. There was also live video of the chopper hitting the mtn and tumbling down. What a tragedy!

I heard about the Mt. Hood incident late today on the radio... yes, it's international news. Horrifying... And cell phones are good things. When we saw a rapeller fall a coupla weeks ago while I was on a course *none* of us had a cell. Thank the gods there were other climbers out and about that had one (*everyone* had their cell with them on the second day of the course).

Sounds to me like the pave hawk ran out of power durning the hoist operation. Probably the same scenario as I described in the post under the rescues can be dangerous topic only this time there wasn't a power recovery. When I go down for training tomorrow I know what the conversations will be about. It is going to bring flash backs to the crew members in my unit that were on the helicopter that went down on Mount Shasta two years ago. My condolences go out to all that died and I hope for a full recovery of those that were injured. Joel

Sobering thoughts, seeing as how I'm headed out to climb Shasta and Hood in a week and a half. My prayers are with them as well.

This is hearsay at the moment but I just hear that 2 climbers are in critical condition and things aren't looking well and 1 is going to survive. The rest have succumb to their injuries or the elements on Mt. Hood. God please be with those individuals and rescuers.
