Your opinions, please, on why you climb where you do - whether it be CCC, MPHC, Extra Vertical, Chelsea Piers (Field House), Chelsea Piers (Main Wall), NJ Rock Gym, Go Vertical Stamford, or some other wall. Thanks. T

I usually go to City Climbers club or Extra Vertical. I think the routes at CCC are a little better, and it has a better atmosphere, but EV has longer routes, is less crowded sometimes, and is easier to get to... I've been going to EV mostly but I'm thinking of going back to CCC more. Chelsea piers is great (I've only climbed on their main wall) best wall in the city, especially if you like to lead hard routes (minimum 5.10). The climbers there tend to be very good (at least for what I'm used to for a gym). However, the cost there is prohibitive -- a day pass is $50. however, if you've got plenty of cash -- by all means get a full membership there and enjoy the rest of the sports club as well. We had a few free day passes, so we climbed there once or twice. The gym in Stamford is great -- not the best gym I've ever been to but very good. Occasionally during the winter, when we can't climb outdoors, we take a "field trip" there. I've heard the gym in NJ is better for bouldering than routes.... never been to manhatten plaza..... bottom line: unless you can afford Chelsea, gyms in Manhatten kinda suck. CCC, while a little scrappy, is probably the best bet for the climber of average means. Bascially, try to get up to the gunks as much as you can.

I'm currently a member at CCC, and believe me - I get up to the Gunks nearly every weekend. I'm merely trying to get a consensus on what other gyms (aside from Chelsea, because that's way too expensive) are decent, because I'm getting sick and tired of CCC. I don't like Extra Vertical for various reason, and Chelsea - of course - is out of the question. So far, the best gym in the area looks to be Go Vertical Stamford. I appreciate your input; thanks. :) T

I recently joined MPHC, after climbing at EV for 2 years. During the 2 years at EV, I've seen the holds moved around once or twice, so by the time I left, I had climbed every possible combination you can make by rearranging the tags. I'll still go back occassionally. As of this post, the routes at MPHC (especially bouldering) are the best I've seen. Seems like there are new boulder problems every week. They're pretty good with updating their stock with new holds. The CCC is a good place if you're on a budget and/or a newbie; they got good people there. Chelsea, well we know the deal with them. Ben, come to MPHC! Dooooo it!

I go to CCC because Iggy is so damn entertaining, chicks climb there in skimpy outfits, and there are decent bars nearby. Tai, don't you have some work to be doing?

Taino -- I read your question quickly and answered it as: someone doesn't know about NYC gyms and is looking for advice. If I'd looked for a second more, I would have realized that you knew all the options and were just trying to see people's opinions. In any case... I'm thinking about going to CCC more. I always like the routes and the vibe there, even if its crowded and tiny. Roger: so that's where you've been. yeah.... EV is starting to feel a little old...

I have found that MPHC is a great gym, especially for working on strength and technique. And, while the yearly price is a little steep, I think that it is worth it. I have found that their grades, especially for bouldering are fair and realistic. It has a great lead climb section (which CCC doesn't). Also, the people there are very cool.

I like Go Vertical. Long routes are more like outside routes like the gunks that I'm climbing a lot. Also the route grades are good. People at CCC seem complaining and not friendly to me. MPHC is also good. -Jacques

Just to speak up for Go Vertical Stamford, you cannot beat the value of the place, a day pass is ten bucks and gear kit is pretty affordable (i'm assuming that everybody here has their own). It has a fairly decent set of routes as well, and decent mock leading. Great environment, good place to go and climb plus chill. Additionally if you live in Manhattan, its about a ten minute walk from the Stamford Station (stamford line). Well worth the Metro-North ticket if you ask me. I've found the NYC gyms kind of have a more tense atmosphere, not as much camradrie, and besides they're mad expensive.

We got a family membership at Go Vertical after we took my son (8 y/o)there for an afternoon lesson. Naturally he loved it, and we found the people there (staff and climbers) to be real friendly, loose and not at all "New York." Routes are good as well, and they're always willing to pass on a little beta. Plus, it's convenient (Metro North) Only complaint (and it is a minor one) is that sometimes the kid parties (like yesterdays!) get out of control. The kids yesterday were so loud that it was tough to communicate with your climber. Also had to gently stop the kids from running the ropes and falling all over the place. Over all, a cool place.

Every time I go, it's $17 - and I have all my own gear. Edited to say: It's only $10 IF you're a junior (under 17 years old) AND you're coming in during an offpeak time (M-F, 10am-5pm). Otherwise, it's much more. T T

there has to be a loophole to get into chelsea piers. people who have full memberships must not always use all their guest passes, surely they'd be willing to sell them, no? anyone know how strict they are with respect to who uses the guest passes?

I think that the folks at CCC are some of the best in the world but who knows you may have one of those types of humor that does not mesh well. I say give em' another try. I now live in Chicago and often yearn for CCC. Good luck!
